Ezekiel Chapter 39

  • Ezekiel 39:1 Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal:
  • 2 And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee, and will cause thee to come up from the north parts, and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel:

First of all there is more than one invasion of Israel by Gog. The first time he invades and takes over completely, setting up the abomination of desolation and rule from there for 3/12 years breaking the earlier covenant with them. This causes them to flee into the wilderness. The whole area is trodden down by the Gentiles.

Tidings out of the north causes Gog or antichrist to have to leave off persecuting Israel and defeat armies to the north. He then brings all nations against Jerusalem to get rid of them completely but it doesn't work. This time Gog and his armies are defeated instead by the hand of God.

There are scholars who believe Gog to be Russia rather than the antichrist and this invasion is speaking of a war with Israel before the rise of the antichrist. That could be. If Gog is Russia though it could be that the tiding out of the north that troubles the antichrist spoken of in the book of Daniel, will cause the armies of the antichrist that are in Israel to fight against Russia. Russia will be defeated if that is Russia. We can only speculate at this time point but our spiritual eyes can be open as we watch events in the middle east praying always for the peace of Jerusalem and all Israel as the bible has instructed us to do. Some believe Gog to be Turkey which is also north of Israel. No matter who is what though, all that come against Israel will be defeated in the long run. I didn't say this. It is what the bible teaches.

  • Ezekiel 39:3 And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand.
  • 4 Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands, and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured.

This is also described in Revelation 19.

  • Revelation 19:17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;
  • 18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.
  • 19 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.
  • 20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshiped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.
  • 21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

Friends we need to get on the Lord's side because all evil and all those that come up against Israel or Jerusalem will not win.  Any military victory would be only temporary. In the end, God wins, not man nor any evil spirit behind man's attempts to harm God's people.

  • Ezekiel 39:5 Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
  • 6 And I will send a fire on Magog, and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the LORD.

God's judgment then falls upon all nations great and small that came against Israel or even those that rejoice in Israel's destruction.

This is why we need to fear God and not come against Israel or try to divide their land. We must stand up for their right to exist and live in peace always praying for the conversion of Israel to Jesus Christ.

This doesn't mean that we back Israel in all that they do and assume that just because they are Israel that they can do no wrong. That is a mistake some are making. It does mean that we recognize their right to occupy the land God gave to them. It does mean that we are good and kind to them and desire their peace.

  • Ezekiel 39:7 So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.

All their loss of land rights was caused by their own rebellion against God and then their rejection of their Messiah sent to save them from sin. In other words they do cause much of their own trouble at times but other nations should fear God and not overstep their bounds. We are not to go up against Israel at any time or we will end up just like these armies described here that go up and are destroyed.

If something bad happens to Israel, we are not to gloat and rejoice but rather mourn. If God does not let Israel get by with sin, He's not going to allow us to get by with sin either.

  • Ezekiel 39:8 Behold, it is come, and it is done, saith the Lord GOD; this is the day whereof I have spoken.
  • 9 And they that dwell in the cities of Israel shall go forth, and shall set on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and the bucklers, the bows and the arrows, and the handstaves, and the spears, and they shall burn them with fire seven years:

This is the only legitimate time when weapons are to be destroyed and put away.

  • Ezeiel 39:10 So that they shall take no wood out of the field, neither cut down any out of the forests; for they shall burn the weapons with fire: and they shall spoil those that spoiled them, and rob those that robbed them, saith the Lord GOD.

Israel here does not invade other countries and take away what belongs to someone else. They spoil those that came against them and rob those that robbed them. It is fair and just.

  • Ezekiel 39:11 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call it The valley of Hamon-gog.
  • 12 And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.

There is so many dead that they hire people to bury the dead and it takes seven years there are so many.

  • Ezekiel 39:13 Yea, all the people of the land shall bury them; and it shall be to them a renown the day that I shall be glorified, saith the Lord GOD.
  • 14 And they shall sever out men of continual employment, passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search.
  • 15 And the passengers that pass through the land, when any seeth a man's bone, then shall he set up a sign by it, till the buriers have buried it in the valley of Hamon-gog.
  • 16 And also the name of the city shall be Hamonah. Thus shall they cleanse the land.
  • 17 And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; Speak unto every feathered fowl, and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood.
  • 18 Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan.
  • 19 And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you.
  • 20 Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord GOD.

All these things are described in Revelation and some in the book of Daniel. These things shall come to pass as these prophecies reveal.

  • Ezekiel 39:21 And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them.

Not all heathen are destroyed but only those that come up against Israel and rejoice in their destruction.

The heathen will know who is God and who is the Messiah of Israel. Israel will be the nation that God chooses to rule over and bring peace to the earth at last.

  • Ezekiel 39:22 So the house of Israel shall know that I am the LORD their God from that day and forward.

Israel will discover that the Messiah their ancestors rejected is the Messiah that is to rule over them and from them rule the world.

  • Ezekiel 39:23 And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword.
  • 24 According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions have I done unto them, and hid my face from them.

All heathen nations that survive all this destruction will learn of the lesson of Israel. Israel was scattered from their land more than once for sin and disobedience to God. When they turn to God and recognize Jesus Christ as Lord, no one and nothing can ever remove their land from them again.

  • Ezekiel 39:25 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Now will I bring again the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be jealous for my holy name;
  • 26 After that they have borne their shame, and all their trespasses whereby they have trespassed against me, when they dwelt safely in their land, and none made them afraid.
  • 27 When I have brought them again from the people, and gathered them out of their enemies' lands, and am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations;

A final re-gathering of Israel will come at this time and all scattered Israelis will come into the land of Israel because that is where Christ will sit on the throne ruling the nations. Israel will be cleansed from their sin and exalted above all other nations.

  • Ezekiel 39:28 Then shall they know that I am the LORD their God, which caused them to be led into captivity among the heathen: but I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them any more there.
  • 29 Neither will I hide my face any more from them: for I have poured out my spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.

The prophecy in Joel of the outpouring of God's spirit will be complete at this time.

That was only fulfilled in part in the book of Acts. It also was given to Gentile believers during the church age but kind of died out until the late 1800s and the early 1900s when we saw a latter day outpouring of God's spirit. Still that wasn't the complete fulfillment. That doesn't happen until the last seven years of this age up until Jesus returns a second time.

People who reject the baptism of the Holy Ghost are robbing themselves of a great blessing from the Lord that we need to keep us from being deceived. With the Holy Spirit baptism comes the power to preach the gospel that brings conviction of sin to the lost. It is the Holy Spirit that brings souls to Jesus Christ and if we rob ourselves of this blessing because our own church tradition neglects to teach it or tells us all is given when we first believe in Christ, we are only going forth in half the power that we need to convince the world that they have sinned and are in need of a savior.

We do receive a measure of the spirit when we first come to Christ. That living water starts to flow within us the minute we are born again by the spirit. This though is only the beginning. There are many times when we need to be filled with the spirit. It is never a one time experience. We need to be completely baptized and filled with the spirit all through our walk with the Lord.

Do not fear speaking in tongues and prophesying. This is part of that spirit baptism. This is evidence of His presence. It is not the only evidence; there is much more, but it is evidence just the same and should never be downplayed or spoken evil of.

Speaking in tongues is proof of the supernatural presence of God. With all the modern teaching on evolution, with all the different religions and denominations and with all the unbelief we face day by day, we need all the witness of the spirit that we can get to confirm the written word that God has provided us with.

The true Holy Spirit will not add to or take away from the word that is written already but He will confirm it and witness to our own spirit the truth it contains.
