11 Chronicles Chapter 14
Asa Reigns in Judah
- 2Chronicles 14:1 So
Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city
of David: and Asa his son reigned in his stead. In his days the
land was quiet ten years.
- 2 And Asa did that
which was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God:
I praise God when I see this. When I
see a king that was right in the sight of the Lord. Awesome to think
about. When we see the term, "Slept with his fathers," it simply
means they go were those went before them, out into eternity where
the soul and spirit do not die, only the body.
- 2Chronicles 14:3 For
he took away the altars of the strange gods, and the high
places, and brake down the images, and cut down the groves:
- 4 And commanded
Judah to seek the LORD God of their fathers, and to do the law
and the commandment.
- 5 Also he took away
out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the images:
and the kingdom was quiet before him.
He removed things that should not have
been there to start with.
- Exodus 20:3 Thou
shalt have no other gods before me.
- 4 Thou shalt not
make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing
that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or
that is in the water under the earth:
- 5 Thou shalt not
bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God
am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the
children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate
me;
- 6 And shewing
mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my
commandments.
New Testament:
- Galatians 5:16
This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the
lust of the flesh.
- 17 For the flesh
lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh:
and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot
do the things that ye would.
- 18 But if ye be
led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
- 19 Now the works
of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery,
fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
- 20 Idolatry,
witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife,
seditions, heresies,
- 21 Envyings,
murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I
tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they
which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Idolatry is a direct insult to our holy
God.
- Colossians 3:4
When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also
appear with him in glory.
- 5 Mortify
therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication,
uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and
covetousness, which is idolatry:
- 6 For which
things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of
disobedience:
Idolatry got Israel and Judah in more
trouble than anything else. It will bring a king down fast.
- 2Chronicles 14:6 And
he built fenced cities in Judah: for the land had rest, and he
had no war in those years; because the LORD had given him rest.
- 7 Therefore he said
unto Judah, Let us build these cities, and make about them
walls, and towers, gates, and bars, while the land is yet before
us; because we have sought the LORD our God, we have sought him,
and he hath given us rest on every side. So they built and
prospered.
God had given them rest and blessed
them.
- 2 Chronicles 14:8
And Asa had an army of men that bare targets and spears, out of
Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, that bare
shields and drew bows, two hundred and fourscore thousand: all
these were mighty men of valour.
- 9 And there came out
against them Zerah the Ethiopian with an host of a thousand
thousand, and three hundred chariots; and came unto Mareshah.
I wonder if Asa knew they were about to
be invaded by the Ethiopians which caused him to build an army. Yet
we shall see that even with his armies they needed the help of God
to survive.
- 2Chronicles 14:10
Then Asa went out against him, and they set the battle in array
in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.
- 11 And Asa cried
unto the LORD his God, and said, LORD, it is nothing with thee
to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power:
help us, O LORD our God; for we rest on thee, and in thy name we
go against this multitude. O LORD, thou art our God; let not man
prevail against thee.
- 12 So the LORD smote
the Ethiopians before Asa, and before Judah; and the Ethiopians
fled.
- 13 And Asa and the
people that were with him pursued them unto Gerar: and the
Ethiopians were overthrown, that they could not recover
themselves; for they were destroyed before the LORD, and before
his host; and they carried away very much spoil.
- 14 And they smote
all the cities round about Gerar; for the fear of the LORD came
upon them: and they spoiled all the cities; for there was
exceeding much spoil in them.
- 15 They smote also
the tents of cattle, and carried away sheep and camels in
abundance, and returned to Jerusalem.
I would say here that if any nation
wants to survive no matter how great their armies are, they need to
be on the Lord's side. There is no power greater than the power of
God.
In chapter 15 we read that Asa had not
gotten rid of quite all the high places so that may be the reason
for this war with Ethiopia. That is just my speculation but it is
something to think about. Removing all evil or connection with
idolatry is safer.
