1 Chronicles Chapter 16

The Ark Placed in a Tent

  • 1Chronicles 16:1  So they brought the ark of God, and set it in the midst of the tent that David had pitched for it: and they offered burnt sacrifices and peace offerings before God.
  • 2  And when David had made an end of offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD.

David prepared a tent to set the ark of God in and then prayed a blessing over the people. This is also what Solomon did in 1 Kings 8:14. Oh how wonderful it would be if all of us would remain in this state of being in our first love for our Lord. Life may deal many blows to us sometimes and it could cause us to stray or be discouraged along the way. This is why we need to have a constant prayer life. We must not forsake the assembling of ourselves together with others in true worship. Be determined to follow the Lord until He takes us home. This will prove to be much better in the long run.

  • 1 Chronicles 16:3  And he dealt to every one of Israel, both man and woman, to every one a loaf of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine.
  • 4  And he appointed certain of the Levites to minister before the ark of the LORD, and to record, and to thank and praise the LORD God of Israel:
  • 5  Asaph the chief, and next to him Zechariah, Jeiel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Mattithiah, and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Obededom: and Jeiel with psalteries and with harps; but Asaph made a sound with cymbals;
  • 6  Benaiah also and Jahaziel the priests with trumpets continually before the ark of the covenant of God.

This was a time of excitement and praise but given in reverance and the joy of the Lord. I would have loved to heard that. Hearing trumpets and shofars give me the chills.

  • 1Chronicles 16:7  Then on that day David delivered first this psalm to thank the LORD into the hand of Asaph and his brethren.

David's Song of Thanks

  • 1Chronicles 16:8  Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people.

How much do we just give the Lord thanks for His salvation?  He provided to both Jews and Gentiles this great salvation through faith in Jesus, the Son of God. Receiving Jesus by faith brings us life eternal. Our souls are saved are our sins are forgiven. We then begin a new life in Jesus our Christ.

  • 1Chronicles 16:9  Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk ye of all his wondrous works.

We are to sing of Him and speak to others of His wonderful works. Never be ashamed of our Lord.

  • 1Chronicles 16:10  Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD.
  • 11  Seek the LORD and his strength, seek his face continually.
  • 12  Remember his marvellous works that he hath done, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth;

Jesus said:

  • Luke 11:9  And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
  • 10  For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
  • 11  If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?
  • 12  Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?
  • 13  If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

It is God's will not only to forgive sin and grant us eternal life but to fill us with His Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is to dwell within us. He is a comforter, a teacher and gives us power for service. He is much more than that. Oh what we miss out on if we do not ask, seek and receive all God has for us.

  • 1Chronicles 16:13  O ye seed of Israel his servant, ye children of Jacob, his chosen ones.
  • 14  He is the LORD our God; his judgments are in all the earth.
  • 15  Be ye mindful always of his covenant; the word which he commanded to a thousand generations;
  • 16  Even of the covenant which he made with Abraham, and of his oath unto Isaac;
  • 17  And hath confirmed the same to Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant,
  • 18  Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance;
  • 19  When ye were but few, even a few, and strangers in it.

An everlasting covenant was given to Abraham. Some believe in what we call a replacement teaching saying that the church replaced Israel and that the church is the new Israel. It is a dangerous false teaching that came about when there was no nation of Israel for almost 2,000 years until 1948. Everlasting means everlasting. Israel will one day recognize that the one that came the first time over 2000 years ago was in fact the Messiah they were once looking for in the past but failed to recognize Him because the first coming was to die for sins and become the final sacrifice for our sins. The sins of both Jew and Gentile. They were looking for a hero of sorts that would deliver them from the bondage of the Roman Empire instead of a savior from sin. Jesus will be that kind of deliverer the second time He comes back to the earth. but the sin problem had to be taken care of first.

David recognized the everlasting covenant given to Abraham was for real and rejoiced in that hope.

  • 1Chronicles 16:20  And when they went from nation to nation, and from one kingdom to another people;
  • 21  He suffered no man to do them wrong: yea, he reproved kings for their sakes,
  • 22  Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.

This verse is speaking mainly of Israel not everyone that claims to be a prophet. Even though Israel has not yet recognized their Messiah as a nation at this time, April 2025, that day will come in the future. When we recognize Israel as chosen of the Lord, it is because of God's promise and words to Abraham. It is not that we condone everything they believe in and do. Until they come to Christ they have no power over sin just like the Gentiles have no victory over sin until they come to Christ Jesus. There is only one way to obtain eternal life and salvation. It is through Jesus and that's it. Yet we who really study the bible know that God will save Israel and the fact that they are His chosen people has not changed.

When Gentiles come to Jesus for salvation they do not replace Israel but become children of Abraham by adoption.

  • Romans 11:25  For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.
  • 26  And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:
  • 27  For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.
  • 28  As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers' sakes.

In Romans chapters 10, 11, and 12, Paul explains the salvation of Israel and the covenant God made with Abraham and how the Gentiles fit into the great salvation provided by faith in Jesus the Christ.

  • 1Chronicles 16:23  Sing unto the LORD, all the earth; shew forth from day to day his salvation.
  • 24  Declare his glory among the heathen; his marvellous works among all nations.
  • 25  For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised: he also is to be feared above all gods.
  • 26  For all the gods of the people are idols: but the LORD made the heavens.

When we worship idols instead of the real God, even images that represent God, we are really insulting God in the biggest way ever. God is our creator who gave His Son to us for a savior from sin. His Son became a human and lived on earth but without sinning even one time. Death came upon the whole human race because of sin. Jesus didn't sin so when He died, He died not deserving that death. When we believe in Him, the curse of sin is broken in us and we become just as if we never sinned thereby inheriting eternal life. Jew or Gentile can be saved through faith in Jesus who rose from the dead just as we who believe in Him will be also be raised from the dead at the rapture (resurrection).

  • 1Chronicles 16:27  Glory and honour are in his presence; strength and gladness are in his place.
  • 28  Give unto the LORD, ye kindreds of the people, give unto the LORD glory and strength.
  • 29  Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.
  • 30  Fear before him, all the earth: the world also shall be stable, that it be not moved.
  • 31  Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice: and let men say among the nations, The LORD reigneth.
  • 32  Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof: let the fields rejoice, and all that is therein.
  • 33  Then shall the trees of the wood sing out at the presence of the LORD, because he cometh to judge the earth.
  • 34  O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.
  • 35  And say ye, Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather us together, and deliver us from the heathen, that we may give thanks to thy holy name, and glory in thy praise.
  • 36  Blessed be the LORD God of Israel for ever and ever. And all the people said, Amen, and praised the LORD.

All the above shall come to pass. Worshiping in the beauty of holiness can happen now along with giving thanks, purity, joy, and awaiting His second coming. David wrote this before the first coming of Jesus. To all who have rejected Israel, beware. They will be included in the latter day restoration under the final king of kings and lord of lords, Jesus Christ.

Worship Before the Ark

  • 1Chronicles 16:37  So he left there before the ark of the covenant of the LORD Asaph and his brethren, to minister before the ark continually, as every day's work required:
  • 38  And Obededom with their brethren, threescore and eight; Obededom also the son of Jeduthun and Hosah to be porters:
  • 39  And Zadok the priest, and his brethren the priests, before the tabernacle of the LORD in the high place that was at Gibeon,
  • 40  To offer burnt offerings unto the LORD upon the altar of the burnt offering continually morning and evening, and to do according to all that is written in the law of the LORD, which he commanded Israel;
  • 41  And with them Heman and Jeduthun, and the rest that were chosen, who were expressed by name, to give thanks to the LORD, because his mercy endureth for ever;
  • 42  And with them Heman and Jeduthun with trumpets and cymbals for those that should make a sound, and with musical instruments of God. And the sons of Jeduthun were porters.
  • 43  And all the people departed every man to his house: and David returned to bless his house.

What a day that must have been. Why was David and his people so enthusiatic about the ark? It represented the covenant between Israel and God. It meant that God was in their midst and they were not alone. It was a time of rejoicing and gladness, revival, and fervent worship. Many of us have that now through our faith in Jesus. We gather together to sing, pray and worship in the beauty of holiness now. We study His word at home verse by verse and have many good preachers that God anoints to bring forth His word in that way also. God gives us that and more through His indwelling Holy Spirit. -Dorna
