1 Chronicles Chapter 26

Divisions of the Gatekeepers

  • 1Chronicles 26:1  Concerning the divisions of the porters: Of the Korhites was Meshelemiah the son of Kore, of the sons of Asaph.
  • 2  And the sons of Meshelemiah were, Zechariah the firstborn, Jediael the second, Zebadiah the third, Jathniel the fourth,
  • 3  Elam the fifth, Jehohanan the sixth, Elioenai the seventh.
  • 4  Moreover the sons of Obededom were, Shemaiah the firstborn, Jehozabad the second, Joah the third, and Sacar the fourth, and Nethaneel the fifth,
  • 5  Ammiel the sixth, Issachar the seventh, Peulthai the eighth: for God blessed him.
  • 6  Also unto Shemaiah his son were sons born, that ruled throughout the house of their father: for they were mighty men of valour.
  • 7  The sons of Shemaiah; Othni, and Rephael, and Obed, Elzabad, whose brethren were strong men, Elihu, and Semachiah.
  • 8  All these of the sons of Obededom: they and their sons and their brethren, able men for strength for the service, were threescore and two of Obededom.
  • 9  And Meshelemiah had sons and brethren, strong men, eighteen.

Porters were gatekeepers or door keepers. This would have been a very important position because they were what we would call guards. They kept out those that would enter unlawfully or for evil purposes. What a wonderful time it would be if we all loved God and loved one another as Jesus told us to do, then door keepers and guards would perhaps be needed just to guide and direct visitors in the right direction that they don't get lost but not have to guard against those that are unruly and want to cause harm. Those love verses Jesus gave are powerful but would solve every single problem the world faces today caused by hate.

Love is not accepting everyone no matter what lifestyle they live. Love is telling the truth of how God told us to live in His word. Love doesn't accept evil but accepts good for our well being, for our health, for our eternal souls and much more. If all were made perfect in love, there would be no fear, no hate, and no violence against the innocent.

  • 1John 4:15  Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.
  • 16  And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
  • 17  Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
  • 18  There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
  • 19  We love him, because he first loved us.

Talk about the answer to all the world's problems. This is it. It is something though that can't be forced or legislated. It would take the power of the Holy Spirit within each and every believer in Jesus Christ.

  • 1Chronicles 26:10  Also Hosah, of the children of Merari, had sons; Simri the chief, (for though he was not the firstborn, yet his father made him the chief;)
  • 11  Hilkiah the second, Tebaliah the third, Zechariah the fourth: all the sons and brethren of Hosah were thirteen.
  • 12  Among these were the divisions of the porters, even among the chief men, having wards one against another, to minister in the house of the LORD.
  • 13  And they cast lots, as well the small as the great, according to the house of their fathers, for every gate.
  • 14  And the lot eastward fell to Shelemiah. Then for Zechariah his son, a wise counsellor, they cast lots; and his lot came out northward.
  • 15  To Obededom southward; and to his sons the house of Asuppim.
  • 16  To Shuppim and Hosah the lot came forth westward, with the gate Shallecheth, by the causeway of the going up, ward against ward.
  • 17  Eastward were six Levites, northward four a day, southward four a day, and toward Asuppim two and two.
  • 18  At Parbar westward, four at the causeway, and two at Parbar.
  • 19  These are the divisions of the porters among the sons of Kore, and among the sons of Merari.

They had many of these men serving as porters. There were more than one door or gate plus they had different duties and also probably had to take turns. Yet the service was important and the service glorified God and kept things running smoothly. They didn't seem to take their duties lightly at this time. David really was serious about setting things in order for his son Solomon to have a righteous reign. The worship of God was David's priority.

Lots were cast for porters of every gate. The Eastern gate fell to Shelemiah. Zechariah his son was given the northern gate. Obededom the southern gate. The western one to Shuppim and Hosah. Yet we see that more porters were required in groups. Everything was done in order so that their duties worked smoothly. What a task David had to set this in order like this.

Treasurers and Other Officials

  • 1Chronicles 26:20  And of the Levites, Ahijah was over the treasures of the house of God, and over the treasures of the dedicated things.
  • 21  As concerning the sons of Laadan; the sons of the Gershonite Laadan, chief fathers, even of Laadan the Gershonite, were Jehieli.
  • 22  The sons of Jehieli; Zetham, and Joel his brother, which were over the treasures of the house of the LORD.
  • 23  Of the Amramites, and the Izharites, the Hebronites, and the Uzzielites:
  • 24  And Shebuel the son of Gershom, the son of Moses, was ruler of the treasures.
  • 25  And his brethren by Eliezer; Rehabiah his son, and Jeshaiah his son, and Joram his son, and Zichri his son, and Shelomith his son.
  • 26  Which Shelomith and his brethren were over all the treasures of the dedicated things, which David the king, and the chief fathers, the captains over thousands and hundreds, and the captains of the host, had dedicated.

All the names of the Levites that served the house of the Lord maintained the treasures that were accumulated since the days of Samuel. It seems as if the desire to build the temple started earlier yet was prevented until this time because David truly desired to build this but was not allowed because of so much violence. Yet God allowed Solomon to build this. God knew this was a temporary building and the real temple is yet to be built by the Son of God we know as Jesus at the beginning of His 1000 year reign on the earth. In the latter days when all evil is destroyed upon the earth, God creates a new heaven and earth in which the New Jerusalem is brought down. There will be no need of a temple then.

  • Revelation 21:10  And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,
  • 11  Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal;
  • 12  And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:
  • 13  On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates.
  • 14  And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
  • 15  And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof.
  • 16  And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.
  • 17  And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.
  • 18  And the building of the wall of it was of jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass.
  • 19  And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald;
  • 20  The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst.
  • 21  And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.
  • 22  And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.
  • 23  And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
  • 24  And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.
  • 25  And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.
  • 26  And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it.
  • 27  And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.

No need of a temple when all is done and God and His Son dwells with us.

  • 1Chronicles 26:27  Out of the spoils won in battles did they dedicate to maintain the house of the LORD.
  • 28  And all that Samuel the seer, and Saul the son of Kish, and Abner the son of Ner, and Joab the son of Zeruiah, had dedicated; and whosoever had dedicated any thing, it was under the hand of Shelomith, and of his brethren.

Part of the treasures were from the spoils of war accumulated through the years.

  • 1 Chronicles 26:29  Of the Izharites, Chenaniah and his sons were for the outward business over Israel, for officers and judges.
  • 30  And of the Hebronites, Hashabiah and his brethren, men of valour, a thousand and seven hundred, were officers among them of Israel on this side Jordan westward in all the business of the LORD, and in the service of the king.
  • 31  Among the Hebronites was Jerijah the chief, even among the Hebronites, according to the generations of his fathers. In the fortieth year of the reign of David they were sought for, and there were found among them mighty men of valour at Jazer of Gilead.
  • 32  And his brethren, men of valour, were two thousand and seven hundred chief fathers, whom king David made rulers over the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh, for every matter pertaining to God, and affairs of the king.

Levites and priests were the sons of Levi as we know. David set things up so they had many various duties pertaining to the temple and the worship of God even among the tribes of Reuben, Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh that dwelled on the west side of the Jordan River. We remember that these three tribes settle on the west side instead of going across to the east where most of Israel dwelled. That area is the center of much trouble today among those fighting over that land. DC
