1 Chronicles Chapter 29

Offerings for the Temple

  • 1Chronicles 29:1  Furthermore David the king said unto all the congregation, Solomon my son, whom alone God hath chosen, is yet young and tender, and the work is great: for the palace is not for man, but for the LORD God.

Oh how king David loved the Lord. The temple he wanted to build in his own lifetime will be built in the lifetime of his son, Solomon. It is built again after the Babylonian captivity and will be build again before or during the great tribulation of the future. As of April 2025, this has not come to pass yet. David is finalizing all the preparations for this magnificant building dedicated to the Lord. Notice when sin abounds and people depart from God, the temple built for Him ends up getting destroyed.

  • 1Chronicles 29:2  Now I have prepared with all my might for the house of my God the gold for things to be made of gold, and the silver for things of silver, and the brass for things of brass, the iron for things of iron, and wood for things of wood; onyx stones, and stones to be set, glistering stones, and of divers colours, and all manner of precious stones, and marble stones in abundance.
  • 3  Moreover, because I have set my affection to the house of my God, I have of mine own proper good, of gold and silver, which I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house,
  • 4  Even three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the houses withal:
  • 5  The gold for things of gold, and the silver for things of silver, and for all manner of work to be made by the hands of artificers. And who then is willing to consecrate his service this day unto the LORD?

David wants to give everyone a chance to be part of the means by which this building is built. He shows by example what he is giving from his own wealth and then He asks for others to contribute. It seems to be a freewill offering and not a tax or use of force.

  • 1Chronicles 29:6  Then the chief of the fathers and princes of the tribes of Israel, and the captains of thousands and of hundreds, with the rulers of the king's work, offered willingly,
  • 7  And gave for the service of the house of God of gold five thousand talents and ten thousand drams, and of silver ten thousand talents, and of brass eighteen thousand talents, and one hundred thousand talents of iron.
  • 8  And they with whom precious stones were found gave them to the treasure of the house of the LORD, by the hand of Jehiel the Gershonite.

Jehiel and his sons were in charge of the treasury. What an important responsibility.

  • 1Chronicles 29:9  Then the people rejoiced, for that they offered willingly, because with perfect heart they offered willingly to the LORD: and David the king also rejoiced with great joy.

I prefer to hear of people giving willingly this way rather than scare people into giving by making them feel obligated instead of giving with love and even rejoicing in it. This is the way we should give. Actually this is more the New Testament way of giving. Its a beautiful way to give. This also is the type of giving that pleases God. Giving to be seen of men, or out of fear, or by someone using force is not good. True giving is one way to worship God.

David Prays in the Assembly

  • 1Chronicles 29:10  Wherefore David blessed the LORD before all the congregation: and David said, Blessed be thou, LORD God of Israel our father, for ever and ever.
  • 11  Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all.
  • 12  Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all.
  • 13  Now therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name.
  • 14  But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee.

David recognizes that everything belongs to God and what they were giving was giving back to God what is His to start with but how happy and willing everyone seems to be in this. They were giving with all their hearts and rejoicing at this time. If only we could all worship God and live for God in our first love and not depart from that all the days of our lives.

  • 1Chronicles 29:15  For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.

Our time on the earth in our natural bodies is short compared to eternity. We need to spend every day in love and expectation of our Lord's return.

  • 1Chronicles 29:16  O LORD our God, all this store that we have prepared to build thee an house for thine holy name cometh of thine hand, and is all thine own.
  • 17  I know also, my God, that thou triest the heart, and hast pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of mine heart I have willingly offered all these things: and now have I seen with joy thy people, which are present here, to offer willingly unto thee.

David was so delighted when he saw the willing offerings of the people.

  • 1Chronicles 29:18  O LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, our fathers, keep this for ever in the imagination of the thoughts of the heart of thy people, and prepare their heart unto thee:
  • 19  And give unto Solomon my son a perfect heart, to keep thy commandments, thy testimonies, and thy statutes, and to do all these things, and to build the palace, for the which I have made provision.
  • 20  And David said to all the congregation, Now bless the LORD your God. And all the congregation blessed the LORD God of their fathers, and bowed down their heads, and worshipped the LORD, and the king.
  • 21  And they sacrificed sacrifices unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings unto the LORD, on the morrow after that day, even a thousand bullocks, a thousand rams, and a thousand lambs, with their drink offerings, and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel:

It was days of sacrificing, feasting, rejoicing, worshiping, praising and thanksgiving.

Solomon Anointed King

  • 1Chronicles 29:22  And did eat and drink before the LORD on that day with great gladness. And they made Solomon the son of David king the second time, and anointed him unto the LORD to be the chief governor, and Zadok to be priest.
  • 23  Then Solomon sat on the throne of the LORD as king instead of David his father, and prospered; and all Israel obeyed him.
  • 24  And all the princes, and the mighty men, and all the sons likewise of king David, submitted themselves unto Solomon the king.
  • 25  And the LORD magnified Solomon exceedingly in the sight of all Israel, and bestowed upon him such royal majesty as had not been on any king before him in Israel.

This was the second time Solomon was anointed king. The first time was a hurried anointing at the time when Adonijah decided he was going to be king and had Abiathar the priest to anoint him. The Zadok priesthood was the correct and proper one and he anointed Solomon to be king. One who exalts himself to a high position is usually not the one that would make the best king.

The Death of David

  • 1Chronicles 29:26  Thus David the son of Jesse reigned over all Israel.
  • 27  And the time that he reigned over Israel was forty years; seven years reigned he in Hebron, and thirty and three years reigned he in Jerusalem.
  • 28  And he died in a good old age, full of days, riches, and honour: and Solomon his son reigned in his stead.
  • 29  Now the acts of David the king, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Samuel the seer, and in the book of Nathan the prophet, and in the book of Gad the seer,
  • 30  With all his reign and his might, and the times that went over him, and over Israel, and over all the kingdoms of the countries.

David will rise again. His soul of course does not die and He is with the Lord. He will reign in the latter days under Jesus Christ Himself.

  • Jeremiah 30:7  Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob's trouble; but he shall be saved out of it.
  • 8  For it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will break his yoke from off thy neck, and will burst thy bonds, and strangers shall no more serve themselves of him:
  • 9  But they shall serve the LORD their God, and David their king, whom I will raise up unto them.

Jesus will rule over all the earth and David will be raised to rule over Israel. This occurs after the time of Jacob's trouble which is the future great tribulation that happens just before Jesus returns to set up His kingdom and save Israel from being destroyed by their enemies when many nations gather to destroy them during the great tribulation.

  • Ezekiel 34:23  And I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, even my servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd.
  • 24  And I the LORD will be their God, and my servant David a prince among them; I the LORD have spoken it.

Jesus Christ will be the chief Shepherd. The apostles will rule over each tribe with David as king of Israel. Jesus Christ will return and reign but He is never called a servant like David is referred to here so we see that Jesus and David will be part of the reign of Jesus Christ.

  • Ezekiel 37:21  And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land:
  • 22  And I will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all: and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all:
  • 23  Neither shall they defile themselves any more with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any of their transgressions: but I will save them out of all their dwellingplaces, wherein they have sinned, and will cleanse them: so shall they be my people, and I will be their God.
  • 24  And David my servant shall be king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd: they shall also walk in my judgments, and observe my statutes, and do them.
  • 25  And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt; and they shall dwell therein, even they, and their children, and their children's children for ever: and my servant David shall be their prince for ever.
  • 26  Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them: and I will place them, and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore.
  • 27  My tabernacle also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
  • 28  And the heathen shall know that I the LORD do sanctify Israel, when my sanctuary shall be in the midst of them for evermore.

Some teach that David in these passages means Jesus who is the son of David. That could be but there are scriptures that seem to mean that David himself will be resurrection and rule along with Jesus our Christ. I guess we can all wait and see. I sort of believe David will be part of this. The words given to Daniel shows that these Old Testament saints will have their place in the future.

  • Daniel 12:9  And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.
  • 10  Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.
  • 11  And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.
  • 12  Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days.
  • 13  But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days.

Daniel will have His part in the latter day reign of Jesus Christ the Messiah. So also will all those that believe in Jesus

  • 1Thessalonians 4:13  But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
  • 14  For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
  • 15  For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
  • 16  For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
  • 17  Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
  • 18  Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

Also in Jude:

  • Jude 1:14  And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,

Promise to Believers:

  • John 14:1  Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
  • 2  In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
  • 3  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
  • 4  And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.
All these promises are to those that beleive and follow Jesus.
