1 Chronicles Chapter 3

Descendants of David

  • 1Chronicles 3:1  Now these were the sons of David, which were born unto him in Hebron; the firstborn Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; the second Daniel, of Abigail the Carmelitess:

Abigail was the woman whose husband treated David and his men with rudeness and cruelty. Abigail saved her household from David's vengeance by going out to meet David and began pleading with David to spare their lives because she and her household did not agree with her husband's actions. Her wicked husband died probably by a heart attack when he heard of his wife's actions. David later married Abigail. This account in the life of David is in 1 Samuel 25.

  • 1Chronicles 3:2  The third, Absalom the son of Maachah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur: the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith:
  • 3  The fifth, Shephatiah of Abital: the sixth, Ithream by Eglah his wife

It was a custom in those days for kings and those in high authority to marry wifes given to them from kings or important people from other countries for political reasons. This never means that God ordains plural marriages. He doesn't. In fact the law written by Moses warns against such things. It causes trouble as we see when we read the accounts of Solomon toward the end of his life, and Jacob in the book of Genesis. Some things we see that God allows but don't necessarily ordain.

Absalom was the son that rebelled against David after he killed David's son Amnon for defiling Absalom's sister Tamar. This story is in 2 Samuel 13.

Eglah was a wife that the Targum says that she was Michal the daughter of Saul, David's first wife. However there is a verse that says Michal was childless so but prehaps that was wrong and Michal  had a child before the incident that happened after David danced before the Lord. This story is in 2 Samuel chapter 6. Perhaps her child died and that is why the scripture said she was childless. Only my speculation here.

Here is what the law said about wives:

  • Deuteronomy 17:17  Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.

David was a man that loved God and never once worshipped idols or departed from His faith in God. When he did fail and it was pointed out to him, he genuinely repented and tried to make things right.

  • 1Chronicles 3:4  These six were born unto him in Hebron; and there he reigned seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years.

David had many sons and only one daughter Tamar was listed. Tamar was a good honorable daughter but was defiled and raped by her half brother Amnon.

  • 1Chronicles 3:5  And these were born unto him in Jerusalem; Shimea, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon, four, of Bathshua the daughter of Ammiel:

Nathan was one of the sons of David that was the direct line to Jesus our Christ. Mary the mother of Jesus was desended from Nathan. Joseph the step dad of Jesus descended from Solomon the line of the kings. That is why Jesus is called the son of David as well as the Son of God. Also the lion of the tribe of Judah.

  • 1Chronicles 3:6  Ibhar also, and Elishama, and Eliphelet,
  • 7  And Nogah, and Nepheg, and Japhia,
  • 8  And Elishama, and Eliada, and Eliphelet, nine.
  • 9  These were all the sons of David, beside the sons of the concubines, and Tamar their sister.

2 Samuel 5:13 says that David had sons and daughters so perhaps not all are named in the genealogies.

Concubines are women that are secondary to a wife. I'm glad we got away from that practice at least in the United States. It came about by man not God who created one man and one woman to start out with. Usually a concubine was used if the wife was barren and could not have children.

How different it is now when people that don't want children can just get abortions. At least in biblical times the more children they had the more blessed they thought they were. Women that were barren though sometimes felt inferior.

  • 1Chronicles 3:10  And Solomon's son was Rehoboam, Abia his son, Asa his son, Jehoshaphat his son,

Rehoboam became heir to the throne after the death of Solomon but because of Solomon's sin of idolatry in his old age, the kingdom was split by the judgment of God. Rehoboam was the king of Judah and Jeraboam who was a son of Nebat a servant of Solomon was given the other 10 tribes and became the king of Israel which was the northern kingdom. Judah and the Northern tribe of Israel where constantly at war with each other.

Abia (Abijam) reigned 3 years and followed the sins of his father. 1 Kings 15. Asa on other hand reigned 40 years and did what was right in God's sight. He even removed his own mother from being queen because of her idolatry. His son Jehoshaphat reigned 25 years also doing right as his father Asa. He made peace with the king of Israel. 1 Kings 22 speaks of this.

  • 1Chronicles 3:11  Joram his son, Ahaziah his son, Joash his son,

Joram did evil in the sight of the Lord. His wife was the daughter of Ahab king of Israel who also was evil. Ahaziah also was evil in the sight of the Lord. His mother was Queen Athaliah who was very evil. Joash was the good king who had been hidden when Queen Athaliah destroyed all who would keep her from reigning on the throne. Josah was king 40 years doing right as long as Jehoiada the priest was alive to instruct him. After that Josah (Jehoash) did evil.

  • 1Chronicles 3:12  Amaziah his son, Azariah his son, Jotham his son,

Amaziah did right but not as well as those before him. He was more like Joash his father. Azariah also called Uzziah did right in the sight of God. More about him is in 2 Chronicles 26. He reigned 52 years. Jotham son of Uzziah was also a righteous king.

  • 1Chronicles 3:13  Ahaz his son, Hezekiah his son, Manasseh his son,

Sadly Ahaz didn't do what was righteous but did as the kings of the northern tribe of Israel. He was into idolatry. The northern tribe was taken over by Assyria before the tribe of Judah because they fell away into idolatry first. Most of their kings were wicked.

Hezekiah did right in the sight of the Lord and removed the high places that were places to worship idols. He broke the images. The people were even worshiping the brazen serpent Moses made, so he destroyed that also. When he became sick, Isaiah the prophet told him to get his house in order, it was time for him to die. Hezekiah wept and begged to live longer. The word of God came to Isaiah and he turned back and told Hezekiah the Lord was giving him 15 more years to live.
There is a lot of history about Hezekiah in 2 Kings 18-20.

Now we have Manasseh who was wicked and built up again the high places worshipping the host of heaven. God placed the stars, sun and planets for signs and seasons. We are never to worship them. Manasseh even had his sons passing through fire. He did not worship the true God even once.

  • 1Chronicles 3:14  Amon his son, Josiah his son.

Amon was also very wicked and followed after the ways of his father Manasseh. His own servants rose up and killed him.

Josiah was one of the most righteous kings. He repaired the temple. When Hilkiah the priest brought out the book of the law, Josiah tore his clothes which was a sign of despair and grief because his country had forsaken the ways of God. God withheld judgment against Judah in his days because of Josiah's righteousness.

  • 1Chronicles 3:15  And the sons of Josiah were, the firstborn Johanan, the second Jehoiakim, the third Zedekiah, the fourth Shallum.

Johanan was never king. Jehoiakim, returned to the wickedness of those before him even burning the scrolls of the prophets.

  • 1Chronicles 3:16  And the sons of Jehoiakim: Jeconiah his son, Zedekiah his son.

During the reign of Jeconiah was when the country of Babylon under King Nebuchadnezzar came to bring the nation of Judah into captivity as prophesied by prophets of the Lord. The prophesy came to pass because of the evil of idolatry which causes innocent children to suffer as a result. Departing from God is dangerous to any society. As long as a righteous king reigned, God withheld this from happening but the warnings were not heeded by the evil kings, so for 70 years they came under bondage. The people except for a few followed after the evil of the evil kings which is why judgment falls upon everyone, not just the kings.

Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon. His end was horrible. They made Zedekiah watch as they killed his sons and then put out the eyes of Zedekiah. He was then taken to Babylon in chains.

Wow, people were cruel. This is the end of the kingdom of Judah. The nothern kingdom was already lost so for 70 years there was no Israel or Judah.

  • 1Chronicles 3:17  And the sons of Jeconiah; Assir, Salathiel his son,
  • 18  Malchiram also, and Pedaiah, and Shenazar, Jecamiah, Hoshama, and Nedabiah.
  • 19  And the sons of Pedaiah were, Zerubbabel, and Shimei: and the sons of Zerubbabel; Meshullam, and Hananiah, and Shelomith their sister:
  • 20  And Hashubah, and Ohel, and Berechiah, and Hasadiah, Jushabhesed, five.
  • 21  And the sons of Hananiah; Pelatiah, and Jesaiah: the sons of Rephaiah, the sons of Arnan, the sons of Obadiah, the sons of Shechaniah.
  • 22  And the sons of Shechaniah; Shemaiah: and the sons of Shemaiah; Hattush, and Igeal, and Bariah, and Neariah, and Shaphat, six.
  • 23  And the sons of Neariah; Elioenai, and Hezekiah, and Azrikam, three.
  • 24  And the sons of Elioenai were, Hodaiah, and Eliashib, and Pelaiah, and Akkub, and Johanan, and Dalaiah, and Anani, seven.

So we see that this is the end of the line of kings because of the wickedness of departing from the Lord, both Judah and Israel. Israel was the northern kingdom their nation was gone. Then Judah was in captivity for 70 years until Cyrus allowed them to return to their land and build up their temple again. Judah was considered to be Israel.

They were under the Roman Empire when Christ Jesus came into the human race to save those that believed in Him from sin. After Israel (formerly the kingdom of Judah) rejected Jesus as Christ, they were destroyed again by the Romans in 70 AD. The nation of Israel really didn't exist as a free nation until 1948. They were scattered all over the world as the bible said they would.

When Jesus came, preached the gospel and ushered in the way of salvation, only a few received Him and believed He was the Son of God. The nation as a whole rejected Jesus as the Messiah. They were looking for a Messiah to restore their nation and deliver them from the Romans. They didn't understand that He had to come first to make Himself a final offering for sin. They didn't see themselves as sinners in need of repentance and being born again by the Holy Spirit.

Beginning in 1948 the time clock of bible prophecy started again concerning Israel which will end when Jesus returns a second time to do what they thought He was to do the first time. He will set up His kingdom. Before that time Israel is now surrounded by nations that hate them and they will try to destroy Israel but it will not work for at the last minute Jesus and His believers from Heaven will return and destroy all the armies that surround Israel. When Israel begins to cry out to God and call upon the name of the Lord for deliverance, the Messiah their ancestors rejected will be the one to deliver them. Praise God. As Paul says , all Israel shall be saved.

  • Romans 11:25  For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.
  • 26  And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:
  • 27  For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.
