A Genealogy of Saul
- 1Chronicles 8:1 Now
Benjamin begat Bela his firstborn, Ashbel the second, and Aharah
the third,
- 2 Nohah the fourth,
and Rapha the fifth.
Benjamin was the youngest son of Jacab
and the son who came to Jacob through Rachel who became barren again
after Joseph was born and prayed to have another child. Benjamin was
born but Rachel died in childbirth. Perhaps she was barren because
of something that was wrong inside her womb which caused her to be
unable to have children and this same thing caused her to die in
childbirth also. She was barren for years before her first child,
Joseph was born.
Because Jacob favored Joseph above his
other children, the other older brothers of Leah and the
concubines were extremely jealous and caused a lot of grief to
Joseph and Jacob but I wonder if Benjamin suffered the loss of his
brother as Jacob did. Benjamin and Rueben was not with the other
brothers when they sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites. Benjamin was the
one Joseph purposely gave to him larger portions of food when the
brothers came down to Egypt the second time. I believe he did that
to test his brothers to see if they would be jealous. The stories of
Jacob and Joseph are the most interesting stories in the Old
Testament. It does show us the danger of parents showing more favor
to one child over another.
- 1 Chronicles 8:3 And
the sons of Bela were, Addar, and Gera, and Abihud,
- 4 And Abishua, and
Naaman, and Ahoah,
- 5 And Gera, and
Shephuphan, and Huram.
- 6 And these are the
sons of Ehud: these are the heads of the fathers of the
inhabitants of Geba, and they removed them to Manahath:
- 7 And Naaman, and
Ahiah, and Gera, he removed them, and begat Uzza, and Ahihud.
- 8 And Shaharaim
begat children in the country of Moab, after he had sent them
away; Hushim and Baara were his wives.
Sharharaim may have gone to Moab
because of famine like Elimelech and Naomi did. The story of Naomi
and Ruth is told in the book of Ruth.
Sharharaim beget children in the land
of Moab.
- 1Chronicles 8:9 And
he begat of Hodesh his wife, Jobab, and Zibia, and Mesha, and
Malcham,
- 10 And Jeuz, and
Shachia, and Mirma. These were his sons, heads of the fathers.
- 11 And of Hushim he
begat Abitub, and Elpaal.
- 12 The sons of
Elpaal; Eber, and Misham, and Shamed, who built Ono, and Lod,
with the towns thereof:
Some bible theologians that write
comments said to send them away means that he divorced them and sent
them away taking another wive and bearing more children by the other
wives.
-
1Chronicles 8:13 Beriah
also, and Shema, who were heads of the fathers of the
inhabitants of Aijalon, who drove away the inhabitants of Gath:
Perhaps this happen as vengeance for
what the inhabitants of Gath did to the Ephraim's descendents
mentioned in the previous chapter 7 verse 21.
- 1Chronicles 8:14 And
Ahio, Shashak, and Jeremoth,
- 15 And Zebadiah, and
Arad, and Ader,
- 16 And Michael, and
Ispah, and Joha, the sons of Beriah;
- 17 And Zebadiah, and
Meshullam, and Hezeki, and Heber,
- 18 Ishmerai also,
and Jezliah, and Jobab, the sons of Elpaal;
- 19 And Jakim, and
Zichri, and Zabdi,
- 20 And Elienai, and
Zilthai, and Eliel,
- 21 And Adaiah, and
Beraiah, and Shimrath, the sons of Shimhi;
- 22 And Ishpan, and
Heber, and Eliel,
- 23 And Abdon, and
Zichri, and Hanan,
- 24 And Hananiah, and
Elam, and Antothijah,
- 25 And Iphedeiah,
and Penuel, the sons of Shashak;
- 26 And Shamsherai,
and Shehariah, and Athaliah,
- 27 And Jaresiah, and
Eliah, and Zichri, the sons of Jeroham.
Tradition says that Eliah was Elijah
the prophet. That would mean Elijah came from the seed of Rachel if
true. In 1 Kings 17 he is known as Elijah the Tishbite. So we do not
know for sure what tribe he was from.
The tribe of Benjamin dwelt with the
tribe of Judah was perhaps very loyal to the tribe of Judah and the
true worship of God.
- 1Chronicles 8:29 And
at Gibeon dwelt the father of Gibeon; whose wife's name was
Maachah:
- 30 And his firstborn
son Abdon, and Zur, and Kish, and Baal, and Nadab,
- 31 And Gedor, and
Ahio, and Zacher.
- 32 And Mikloth begat
Shimeah. And these also dwelt with their brethren in Jerusalem,
over against them.
- 33 And Ner begat
Kish, and Kish begat Saul, and Saul begat Jonathan, and
Malchishua, and Abinadab, and Eshbaal.
Here is starting the genealogy of the
first king of Israel. Kish begat Saul, the very first king chosen to
lead Israel. His son Jonathan was one that befriended David even
when his father turned against David.
Meribbaal was another name of
Mephibosheth the one that was crippled.
-
2Samuel_4:4 And
Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son that was lame of his feet. He
was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan
out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up, and fled: and it came
to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became
lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.
There was more in 2 Samuel chapter 9
and 19 about Mephibosheth
- 1Chronicles 8:35 And
the sons of Micah were, Pithon, and Melech, and Tarea, and
Ahaz.
- 36 And Ahaz begat
Jehoadah; and Jehoadah begat Alemeth, and Azmaveth, and Zimri;
and Zimri begat Moza,
- 37 And Moza begat
Binea: Rapha was his son, Eleasah his son, Azel his son:
- 38 And Azel had six
sons, whose names are these, Azrikam, Bocheru, and Ishmael, and
Sheariah, and Obadiah, and Hanan. All these were the sons of
Azel.
- 39 And the sons of
Eshek his brother were, Ulam his firstborn, Jehush the second,
and Eliphelet the third.
- 40 And the sons of
Ulam were mighty men of valour, archers, and had many sons, and
sons' sons, an hundred and fifty. All these are of the sons of
Benjamin.
For some reason God chose a son of
Benjamin to be the first king and then David a son of Judah who was
to inherit the line of the kings.
