1 & 2 Kings

1 Kings Chapter 1

David in His Old Age

  • 1Kings 1:1  Now king David was old and stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he gat no heat.

That doesn't seem too old for us in this modern age. He was about 69 or 70 years old. Perhaps his many sorrows and battles aged him somewhat. One writer said that the Jews back then didn't live long especially compared to the time before the flood of Noah's day. A few lived long after that but the average age decreased not long after the flood, just under or just above 100. Joseph lived to 110 but then inherited diseases and hard lifestyles decreased the average age. When I was a child the age around 60 was considered old. Now the age is increasing but not like it was when God first created male and female. My own father was 95 when he passed.

  • 1Kings 1:2  Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and let her cherish him, and let her lie in thy bosom, that my lord the king may get heat.
  • 3  So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel, and found Abishag a Shunammite, and brought her to the king.

Shunem was a city in the tribe of Issachar. Looks like they thought nothing but the best was good enough for King David.

I'm so glad for the coming of Jesus Christ for His influence elevated the state of women so much so that they could have a choice of how they lived and who they married at least among civilized nations. It took a while. It didn't happen overnight but in a constitutional republic properly run by good people, they are assured of civil rights and not treated like second class citizens. In fact some woman demand too many rights that are actually evil like the right to abort their children in all trimesters of pregancy and in some places after the poor baby is born. I guess what we need now is baby's rights laws passed.

If the Lord delays His coming, we will slowly revert back to the ways of the heathen and women will lose every right the gospel brought to them. There will be slavery again, bondage, misery and hardship. How do I know? By reading and studying the history of the children of Abraham. They start out good but sin soon got so bad that they are judged and they lost their freedom. They repent, get their nation back but it happens again.

Right now Israel is free and back in their own land but they need to watch and make sure they are not doing evil. I was just reading a few months ago that Israel's abortion laws are the most liberal. Sacrificing children to idols in the past like other nations did was one of the things that caused God to allow the Babylonians to bring them back into bondage and they lost their nation for 70 years. They really didn't get it back totally after Cyrus freed them to go back to their land. They did go back but they were under the Roman Empire at the time of the first coming of Jesus. They lost it again in 70 AD until May 1945.

The United States has had it good but we are not mentioned in bible prophecy. Will we exist? Our sins are great. We kicked God out of public schools in the 60s and we have had a moral landslide downward ever since. Some states even allow a baby to die outside the womb up to 28 days before the death of the baby becomes murder. So sad. I am praying hard for the Lord's return soon.

  • 1Kings 1:4  And the damsel was very fair, and cherished the king, and ministered to him: but the king knew her not.

The morals of King David are good at this time. David did not have any desire to have an intimate relationship with this lady. Perhaps at the end of his life he regrets the thing he had with Bathsheba and the consequences that followed involving his own sons.

Adonijah Sets Himself Up as King

  • 1King 1:5  Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king: and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.

This type of things attracts attention and makes an appearance of being official. He gains followers so this is probably why he did this thing. The right thing would have been to wait on the Lord of open the door and yield to His calling not ours. This David did right in his own lifetime. He never once tried to take the kingdom from Saul until God removed Saul. He had the chance a couple of times but he did not do so trusting in God's timing. David knew that God anointed him to be the king after Saul but did not attempt to remove Saul. He would not touch the Lord's anointed. Saul was once anointed as king. I believe though the reason Adonijah was at first successful in doing this is because he was the son of the present king so people would normally follow him thinking to get on the good side of the future king.

  • 1King 1:6  And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, Why hast thou done so? and he also was a very goodly man; and his mother bare him after Absalom.
  • 7  And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest: and they following Adonijah helped him.

David didn't oppose this at first. Adonijah was the brother of Absalom and next in line to be king. David must have forgotten his promise to Bathsheba that Solomon was to be the next king. Since David had done wrong to take Bathsheba and cause the death of her husband, her first son with David died and the second son, Solomon was born and he promised Bathsheba he would be the next king perhaps to make up for what he did to her and her husband.

  • 1Kings 1:8  But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men which belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.
  • 9  And Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fat cattle by the stone of Zoheleth, which is by Enrogel, and called all his brethren the king's sons, and all the men of Judah the king's servants:
  • 10  But Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother, he called not.

Adonijah somehow knew that Zadok the priest, Nathan, Benaiah and his brother Solomon would not approve so he did not call them to come forth to this time of anointing himself to be king. The other sons of David went along with this plan.

I cannot understand why people lie, steal, kill, destroy reputations, fight, cheat and strive so hard to become a king, a president or other public offices. I wouldn't want it if it was given to me without any effort or campaigning on my part. The responsibility to rule over people is something I would avoid like the plague. There is no private life after that. One would constantly be hounded by the press. Look what happend to Donald Trump. One that was persecuted, lied about, and hated so much so that some would have him killed if they thought they would get away with it. They spent millions to take down Trump. If one way would not work, they tried another. It was an awful time. Why? I don't understand this stuff at all. By waiting on God, David did well. He waited on God's timing and did not try to make himself a king ahead of time.

Nathan and Bathsheba Before David

  • 1King 1:11  Wherefore Nathan spake unto Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not?
  • 12  Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son Solomon.

This is really sad that their lives were in danger. Imagine someone wanting to be king so bad that they would destroy anyone that gets in their way. Nathan knew that when Adonijah became the king, he would go after anyone that may be a threat to his rule. God through the prophet Samuel warned Israel about desiring a king. He knew what kings would be like. In fact kings of other nations were already evil and harsh.

The warning given by Samuel is in 1 Samuel chapter 8. God said that when they desired kings instead of judges, they were rejecting God not the prophet Samuel. The sons of Eli and Samuel were their excuse for requesting a change but as we can see by the study of the kings, it gets worse. They get the power to put people to death, take wives from their husbands, multiply wives, wealth and do as they please. Oh how we need the return of Jesus and His righteous kingdom to be set up forever. I look for His coming, I love His coming and I say, "Even so come Lord Jesus."

  • 1Kings 1:13  Go and get thee in unto king David, and say unto him, Didst not thou, my lord, O king, swear unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why then doth Adonijah reign?
  • 14  Behold, while thou yet talkest there with the king, I also will come in after thee, and confirm thy words.
  • 15  And Bathsheba went in unto the king into the chamber: and the king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite ministered unto the king.
  • 16  And Bathsheba bowed, and did obeisance unto the king. And the king said, What wouldest thou?
  • 17  And she said unto him, My lord, thou swarest by the LORD thy God unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne.
  • 18  And now, behold, Adonijah reigneth; and now, my lord the king, thou knowest it not:
  • 19  And he hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the sons of the king, and Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the host: but Solomon thy servant hath he not called.
  • 20  And thou, my lord, O king, the eyes of all Israel are upon thee, that thou shouldest tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
  • 21  Otherwise it shall come to pass, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon shall be counted offenders.

Even though Bathsheba wanted her son to become king, we see that she did nothing until Nathan the prophet was supportive of her and Solomon. Now she feared for their lives. The fact that Adonijah didn't call Solomon or Nathan the prophet to the feast was a hint to what was to come after David died.

  • 1King 1:22  And, lo, while she yet talked with the king, Nathan the prophet also came in.
  • 23  And they told the king, saying, Behold Nathan the prophet. And when he was come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.
  • 24  And Nathan said, My lord, O king, hast thou said, Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne?
  • 25  For he is gone down this day, and hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the king's sons, and the captains of the host, and Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they eat and drink before him, and say, God save king Adonijah.
  • 26  But me, even me thy servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and thy servant Solomon, hath he not called.
  • 27  Is this thing done by my lord the king, and thou hast not shewed it unto thy servant, who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?

Nathan made David aware of the danger not only for Nathan but Solomon, Zadok the priest, Benaiah, and anyone else that stood in Adonijah's way. This finally woke David up to what was happening. David may have known some of this but perhaps (my speculation) he hesitated to stop Adonijah for fear that it would cause more bloodshed like when Absalom was killed. I'm thinking that when he realized his other son Solomon could be in danger, he acted.

Solomon Anointed King

  • 1King 1:28  Then king David answered and said, Call me Bathsheba. And she came into the king's presence, and stood before the king.
  • 29  And the king sware, and said, As the LORD liveth, that hath redeemed my soul out of all distress,
  • 30  Even as I sware unto thee by the LORD God of Israel, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead; even so will I certainly do this day.
  • 31  Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the earth, and did reverence to the king, and said, Let my lord king David live for ever.
  • 32  And king David said, Call me Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada. And they came before the king.
  • 33  The king also said unto them, Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon mine own mule, and bring him down to Gihon:
  • 34  And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel: and blow ye with the trumpet, and say, God save king Solomon.
  • 35  Then ye shall come up after him, that he may come and sit upon my throne; for he shall be king in my stead: and I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah.
  • 36  And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said, Amen: the LORD God of my lord the king say so too.
  • 37  As the LORD hath been with my lord the king, even so be he with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord king David.

That actually happened. Solomon's reign was great. Both Judah and Israel were one kingdom, not two.

  • 1Kings 1:38  So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomon to ride upon king David's mule, and brought him to Gihon.

This really was a smart move on the part of David. No one was allowed to sit on the mule that only David was to sit on. David knew by doing this he was proclaiming Solomon to be king.

  • 1Kings 1:39  And Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and anointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet; and all the people said, God save king Solomon.
  • 40  And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent with the sound of them.

Thankfully all the people supported the words of David and rejoiced in Solomon becoming king. This strengthened Solomon's kingdom right away and Adonijah's followers soon deserted him.

  • 1Kings 1:41  And Adonijah and all the guests that were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating. And when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an uproar?
  • 42  And while he yet spake, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came: and Adonijah said unto him, Come in; for thou art a valiant man, and bringest good tidings.
  • 43  And Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, Verily our lord king David hath made Solomon king.
  • 44  And the king hath sent with him Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and they have caused him to ride upon the king's mule:
  • 45  And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon: and they are come up from thence rejoicing, so that the city rang again. This is the noise that ye have heard.
  • 46  And also Solomon sitteth on the throne of the kingdom.
  • 47  And moreover the king's servants came to bless our lord king David, saying, God make the name of Solomon better than thy name, and make his throne greater than thy throne. And the king bowed himself upon the bed.
  • 48  And also thus said the king, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, which hath given one to sit on my throne this day, mine eyes even seeing it.
  • 49  And all the guests that were with Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and went every man his way.

They were not that loyal if they fled at the first sign of things not going Adonijah's way.

  • 1Kings 1:50  And Adonijah feared because of Solomon, and arose, and went, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.

Now Adonijah feared for his own life. He would have killed Solomon if he were king but since the tide was turning against him, he assumed his own life was in danger. If he would have went his own way and minded his own business, his life would have been spared. This didn't happen as we see in the 2nd chapter but Solomon granted him mercy at first.

  • 1Kings 1:51  And it was told Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah feareth king Solomon: for, lo, he hath caught hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let king Solomon swear unto me to day that he will not slay his servant with the sword.
  • 52  And Solomon said, If he will shew himself a worthy man, there shall not an hair of him fall to the earth: but if wickedness shall be found in him, he shall die.
  • :53  So king Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and bowed himself to king Solomon: and Solomon said unto him, Go to thine house.

I love seeing brothers united and I do wish that could have happened but it shall not be. The lust of the flesh is strong and it has brought down many who succumb to it. That is why God made man and wife. Originally it was one man and one woman united and starting families but the lust and heart's of men disired more than one wife, and even lusted after other men's wives and things changed against the perfect holy will of God. Yet we see God forgiving and granting mercy many times but we end up with God's second best for our lives instead of His divine holy plans for marriage and family life. Even having mulitple wives causes heartache, jealousy, fighting and division down through the years. God's perfect way is best. Loving one another as Christ loves us is the key.
