2 Samuel Chapter 22

David's Song of Deliverance

  • 2Samuel 22:1  And David spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul:
  • 2  And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;
  • 3  The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.
  • 4  I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

Many times God delivered David from the hands of all who wanted to kill him. I've heard many songs written over the years using David's words in this passage. I remember one song with the words, "The Lord is my strength and my song, and He has become my salvation," taken from Psalm 118:14.

  • 2Samuel 22:5  When the waves of death compassed me, the floods of ungodly men made me afraid;

This happened many times when Saul, in rages of jealousy tried to take David's life. In the previous chapter the brother of Joab saved David from being slain by a giant. Even in his youth David as a shepherd boy defended the sheep from dangerous animals. A couple of times God protected David by giving David a chance to kill Saul while he was sleeping but David chose not to touch the Lord's anointed.

  • 2Samuel 22:6  The sorrows of hell compassed me about; the snares of death prevented me;
  • 7  In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried to my God: and he did hear my voice out of his temple, and my cry did enter into his ears.

God also delivered David from David's own son who had an army of followers that grew so big David had to flee the city and hide but God gave David the victory in the end.

  • 2Samuel 22:8  Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations of heaven moved and shook, because he was wroth.
  • 9  There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it.
  • 10  He bowed the heavens also, and came down; and darkness was under his feet.
11  And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: and he was seen upon the wings of the wind.
12  And he made darkness pavilions round about him, dark waters, and thick clouds of the skies.
13  Through the brightness before him were coals of fire kindled.
14  The LORD thundered from heaven, and the most High uttered his voice.
15  And he sent out arrows, and scattered them; lightning, and discomfited them.
16  And the channels of the sea appeared, the foundations of the world were discovered, at the rebuking of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils.
    17  He sent from above, he took me; he drew me out of many waters;
18  He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them that hated me: for they were too strong for me.

This also happened to Jonah when he was delivered from the belly of a large whale or fish. Also when Daniel was delivered from the lions; the time those that hated him tricked the king into sending Daniel to a den of hungry lions. We see also the end times when God delivers Israel from the armies of the anti-christ. The woman in Revelation chapter 12 represents the nation of Israel.

The reason I believe it represents Israel is because of Joseph's dream and Jacob's interpretation.

  • Genesis 37:9  And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.
  • 10  And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?

Why Jacob rebuked Joseph for a dream he dreamed, is puzzling. A person can't help what they dream but it gives us a hint of what the woman represents in Revelation chapter 12.

  • Revelation 12:6  And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.
7  And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
8  And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
9  And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
10  And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
11  And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
12  Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.
13  And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.
14  And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.
15  And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.
16  And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.

I included this to show that many Psalms and songs of David of his deliverance seemed to be a form of prophecy about what is to come as well as about those God delivered in the past, like the 3 Hebrews that were thrown in the furnace and yet didn't burn when God delivered them.

  • 2Samuel 22:19  They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the LORD was my stay.
  • 20  He brought me forth also into a large place: he delivered me, because he delighted in me.
  • 21  The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness: according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.
  • 22  For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God.
  • 23  For all his judgments were before me: and as for his statutes, I did not depart from them.
  • 24  I was also upright before him, and have kept myself from mine iniquity.
  • 25  Therefore the LORD hath recompensed me according to my righteousness; according to my cleanness in his eye sight.

Even in the times David sinned, he never once departed from faith in God and love for God. When he repented, God forgave and restored him. This shows us what happens when a person comes to Christ for salvation. All his past sins are forgiven and he or she becomes a new creature in Christ.

  • 2Samuel 22:26  With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful, and with the upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright.
  • 27  With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself unsavoury.

This is why it is so important to forgive those that do us wrong. It is not easy but when we show mercy, God shows mercy to us. What goes around comes around. We reap what we sow. That also is why those that do evil to human beings without mercy, will never get away with it. When I think of politicians that rob people by over taxing, sending the money to foundations and other countries and then having them give a portion back to their political campaign or even directly to them in some way that is hidden; in the long run it will not profit them. It is all for nothing. It is vanity, a waste and will do them harm, not good.

Those that rule over people with kindness and care, will be the ones that will reap good and be remembered as heroes. Cheaters never win.

  • 2Samuel 22:28  And the afflicted people thou wilt save: but thine eyes are upon the haughty, that thou mayest bring them down.

If those that do evil would only get this. God will bring down those that do evil. Sometimes we may not see it in our lifetime but no one gets away with anything. However, there is hope. When we repent, genuinely repent so much so that we stop sinning and if possible right any wrongs we have done, sometimes the consequences remain as we saw in the life of David, but in eternity, our eternal souls are saved through Jesus our Christ. Abraham and David believed in God and stayed faithful to Him even though they made many mistakes in their lifetime. Their faith saved them. They recognized their faults and trusted in God to provide salvation. David grieved when he sinned. He did not try to ignore or cover it up. We can make things right with God and not be lost. We can change.

  • 2Samuel 22:29  For thou art my lamp, O LORD: and the LORD will lighten my darkness.

We look to Him and He provides a way when there seems to be no way. He is the light of the world. We can overcome by the blood of Jesus that was shed in our place but is available only to those that receive them and simply believe. Abraham believed God and it was counted as righteousness to him.

  • 2Samuel 22:30  For by thee I have run through a troop: by my God have I leaped over a wall.

Every one of David's victories was by the power of God.

  • 2Samuel 22:31  As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him.
  • 32  For who is God, save the LORD? and who is a rock, save our God?
  • 33  God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect.

In the book of Acts as well as the four gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, we see the promise of the Holy Spirit given to those that place their faith in Jesus. By the Holy Spirit we can overcome and live a fruitful life for the Lord.

  • 2Samuel 22:34  He maketh my feet like hinds' feet: and setteth me upon my high places.
  • 35  He teacheth my hands to war; so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.
  • 36  Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy gentleness hath made me great.
  • 37  Thou hast enlarged my steps under me; so that my feet did not slip.
  • 38  I have pursued mine enemies, and destroyed them; and turned not again until I had consumed them.
  • 39  And I have consumed them, and wounded them, that they could not arise: yea, they are fallen under my feet.
  • 40  For thou hast girded me with strength to battle: them that rose up against me hast thou subdued under me.
  • 41  Thou hast also given me the necks of mine enemies, that I might destroy them that hate me.
  • 42  They looked, but there was none to save; even unto the LORD, but he answered them not.
  • 43  Then did I beat them as small as the dust of the earth, I did stamp them as the mire of the street, and did spread them abroad.
  • 44  Thou also hast delivered me from the strivings of my people, thou hast kept me to be head of the heathen: a people which I knew not shall serve me.
  • 45  Strangers shall submit themselves unto me: as soon as they hear, they shall be obedient unto me.
  • 46  Strangers shall fade away, and they shall be afraid out of their close places.
  • 47  The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation.

Again and again, many compassed David before and after he became king but through God's strength and power, David was victorious over all enemies including enemies in the spiritual realm. We can see from this writing by his own hand that he overcame his own failures by God's faithfulness to him.

  • 2Samuel 22:48  It is God that avengeth me, and that bringeth down the people under me,
  • 49  And that bringeth me forth from mine enemies: thou also hast lifted me up on high above them that rose up against me: thou hast delivered me from the violent man.
  • 50  Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name.
  • 51  He is the tower of salvation for his king: and sheweth mercy to his anointed, unto David, and to his seed for evermore.

In the latter days the final attack of the enemy against all the followers of Jesus Christ is defeated.

  • Revelation 20:9  And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.

To all that read this study, God and His people will win in the end where it counts for all eternity. We don't have to be lost and on the losing side. Jesus is the light, the true and the way out of the mess of sin we get ourselves in.  DC
