Isaiah Chapter 64

  • Isaiah 64:1  Oh that thou wouldest rend the heavens, that thou wouldest come down, that the mountains might flow down at thy presence.
  • 2 As when the melting fire burneth, the fire causeth the waters to boil, to make thy name known to thine adversaries, that the nations may tremble at thy presence!
  • 3 When thou didst terrible things which we looked not for, thou camest down, the mountains flowed down at thy presence.

How many times I have had this same wish. "Please show forth your power Lord to all that do not believe. Please come down and show the world who is God." I have had these same types of thoughts. God is so good. God will show forth his presence in His own time, not mine. One day the mountains will move and the whole earth will tremble at the presence of God.

  • Revelation 6:15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
  • 16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
  • 17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

God has His own timing. His love and patience with mankind is great. His kindness is shown in the next verse. For those that believe, in Him and follow His paths, He is preparing a place for them greater than anything we've seen of heard of.

  • Isaiah 64:4 For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him.

This verse is repeated in 1 Corinthians 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

This is a comforting promise for those that love God and wait for Him. We have not even imagined the glory, beauty and splendor of the place God has prepared for believers. Why so many of us throw it away for the short, temporary pleasures of this life is really hard to imagine in light of the scriptures that shows us the truth. Maybe many who have fallen by the way side are those who are not grounded in the word of truth.

  • Isaiah 64:5 Thou meetest him that rejoiceth and worketh righteousness, those that remember thee in thy ways: behold, thou art wroth; for we have sinned: in those is continuance, and we shall be saved.
  • 6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

This is the state of mankind before Jesus Christ came to redeem and save us from sin. No good works apart from the blood of Jesus Christ can possibly save from sin. We can give to the poor (and we should), we can build hospitals, we can do all manner of good deeds for our fellow man and we should, but that will not buy our salvation. Only the shed blood of Jesus Christ is able to save and redeem us from the original fall since the days of Adam.

  • Isaiah 64:7 And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.

This is the true state of the world today. Many do not call upon God, in fact they deny his existence. They deny a need to be saved from sin. They trust in social programs instead of the power of God. The social programs have been a total failure. Some have thought education was the answer to the problems facing the world. That has failed, violence and hate has filled the public schools. There is more education today than any time in history. What is more interesting is that education is available to more people than ever in the past. So education is not the answer.

Some in the government are trying to pass more gun control laws. Yet we know that is not the answer. The answer is the knowledge of God. Knowing that there is a God, knowing He cares about us, and that He wants good for us, is the answer. Knowing that He sets boundaries and laws for our protection, our health and our well being is important to remember. He is out for our good, not evil.

There is everlasting life for those that believe and receive Jesus Christ and everlasting punishment in hell for those that rebel and refuse the good way. Some even bring harm to those that come to tell them the good news of Jesus Christ. God is ignored and set on the back burner and everything else but Him is esteemed to be of more importance.

  • Isaiah 64:8 But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.

This should be our attitude toward God. He is the potter and we are the clay. We are the work of His hand.

  • Isaiah 64:9 Be not wroth very sore, O LORD, neither remember iniquity for ever: behold, see, we beseech thee, we are all thy people.

When we repent and turn to God, He doesn't remember iniquity forever. In fact He forgets and forgives just as if we have never sinned. All He sees is the blood of His Son Jesus Christ covering us.

  • Isaiah 64:10 Thy holy cities are a wilderness, Zion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.
  • 11 Our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee, is burned up with fire: and all our pleasant things are laid waste.
  • 12 Wilt thou refrain thyself for these things, O LORD? wilt thou hold thy peace, and afflict us very sore?

This is what happened to Israel and Judah. They lost everything God had given them because they forsook Him. Moses warned in the book of Deuteronomy what would happen if they strayed from God and began to desire to be like other nations around them. The nations they desired to be like, soon consumed them and brought them under bondage. They drove them from their homeland and persecuted them terribly. Israel was laid waste and did not exist as a nation until 1948. God remembered them and His covenant with Abraham. Israel had to be in their own land again before the great Day of Judgment and the coming of Jesus Christ. DC
