 Jeremiah Chapter 10

  • Jeremiah 10:1 Hear ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:

I've said many times of the nation of Israel, that God chose them for a purpose and that has never changed. He pleads with them many times to hear His word. No nation great or small could have defeated Israel if they were living according to God's word.

Jesus Christ the Son of God came to us through the tiny nation of Israel at a time when Israel was under Roman authority. When Jesus returns the second time He will rule and reign from Israel and no nation will ever defeat them again. First though Jesus had to reconcile many back to the Father in Heaven by making Himself a sacrifice for sins. This was not only for Israel but for all who would believe and turn to Him for salvation.

The need to repent from sin and turn to Christ was at that time a stumbling block to Israel. They were expecting a great military leader to free them from Roman rule. That day will come in the future but the way of salvation was needed first.

In Jeremiah's day, there was a need for repentance and believing in the word of God. Jeremiah was there to warn of judgment because they forsook that word.

  • Jeremiah 10:2 Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.

Heathen are those who do not believe in God or else do not believe God cares or intervenes in the affairs of men. They may believe God exists but do not believe in His word or do not believe the word has any place in our lives. They are unbelievers.

Some believe in the existence of God but believe the discoveries of science and education are to be placed above any faith or belief in God. This is why sometimes the highly educated and those that believe in the bible sometimes clash.

I personally do not believe true science will contradict the word of God. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. Once we depart from the acknowledging of the word of God, we will readily accept a false knowledge that boasts against the word of God. We can be fooled into believing lies that cause our souls to be lost as we substitute false knowledge instead of truth.

We see by the study of Daniel that he was wise and feared God. As a result he was made one of the wise men in Babylon which kings looked to for wisdom.

Learn not the ways of the heathen. This is another unchanged message. The heathen believe in evolution. We are not to learn of those things. God teaches us that we are created in His image.

The ways of the heathen in the Old Testament were to worship idols and sacrifice children to those idols. Today the ways of the heathen are a little different. We don't sacrifice to idols yet.  There is a revival of witchcraft and pagan religions but the present law of the land in most countries would forbid the sacrifice of live humans although I'm starting to hear of some isolated cases. It goes to show that if we continue to ignore the truth of God's word, we will eventually go the wrong way.

We think we are above idol worship and human sacrifice but evil has a way of gaining strength if we neglect the word of God which is a guard against evil. Today abortion is one sneaky way we have accepted as okay. This is one way the enemy of our souls has deceived us so we think its okay to destroy human life.

Abortions are mostly done by those who do not want the responsibility of raising a child. They are not often done just for medical reasons. We are deceived into thinking it is okay to kill an innocent child if it is not convenient to raise that child. Satan comes to steal, kill and destroy. He hates the whole human race. If he can't get us into human sacrifice as the heathen did, he can get us to do it this way.

Also sexual sin is another way to destroy human life, not only with disease and early death but if all were to depart from God's divine order of male and female marriage, human life would eventually disappear. These are all ways of the heathen which ignore the word of God and accept whatever feels good at the time. This is another way that Satan has to destroy human life. Leaving God's divine order of marriage just to do what seems right in our own eyes.

Our pastor told us a few years ago of a sad story. He stated that a young man went off to bible college who had previously vowed to keep himself pure until the day that he was married. As he got around others who lived a little differently, he tried to keeping himself pure but desired to be like the rest of those with him. He started dating and was with a woman who had been around. As a result this young man discovered later than he had aids. The woman he was with had aids but he didn't know it at the time. Just one mistake resulted in that awful disease coming upon him.

We are to follow God and not learn the ways of those who follow the world. The majority are not right most of the time. Jesus said that narrow is the way that leads to eternal life.  If we follow the crowd, we will lose our souls for eternity. Follow after God.

  • Jeremiah 10:3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.
  • 4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.
  • 5 They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.

Although this sounds like our modern Christmas tree, it looks like this once was a heathen practice in which people thought the tree was some kind of god with evil power. This may be similar to the totem pole that the Indians use to make or perhaps it was an idol of some kind.

Jeremiah tells them how vain the practice is and that it cannot do good or evil. I don't think it is telling us not to have Christmas trees just for decoration but if it bothers one not to have one, then don't. I have no problem with someone who doesn't believe in Christmas trees. The bible tells us not to judge one another in respect to a holy day. Some believe every day is alike and some esteem one day above another. However I think the prophet is telling us not to follow after the ways of the heathen which was worshipping idols at that time.

In this present time the ways of the heathen are a little different because they put on the cloak of supposedly being civilized but we are not to be fooled by the outward appearance of respectability of the heathen. Abortion is a practice of being uncivilized as the heathen of old times. The practice of abortion would never have been accepted in the United States if the church had not departed from the fear of God and the authority of the word. Some states allow abortion doctors to allow a baby to die if born alive and it is not wanted. They also sell their body parts and use their tissue cells in vaccines.

  • 1 John 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

The world is considered to be that which ignores the right of God to govern our lives. It ignores the word of God completely. Sad to say also is that many who claim to be Christians are beginning to esteem the written word of God very lightly. They are forsaking the very foundation God gave us and substituting the reasoning of men.

  • Jeremiah 10:6 Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O LORD; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.
  • 7 Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? for to thee doth it appertain: forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee.

If we would only be mindful of this fact everyday, we would be less likely to follow after heathen practices. How great it is to remind ourselves of the greatness of God and how great He really is. If we would spend time in His fellowship and with others who believe in Him, we would be less likely to want to return to sin. To know God is true wisdom.

  • Jeremiah 10:8 But they are altogether brutish and foolish: the stock is a doctrine of vanities.

The doctrine of the heathen and unbelievers is vain and profits nothing. It shall pass away as all vain things will pass away.

  • Jeremiah 10:9 Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men.

All this is considered vain compared to the true God and His righteousness.

  • Jeremiah 10:10 But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.

The word of God is eternal. The things of this life are temporary. Sin and worldliness will be destroyed. God and those who trust in Him will live forever.

  • Jeremiah 10:11 Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens.

All false religions will perish but those that walk in the way God has provided through faith in His Son Jesus Christ shall live eternally.

  • Jeremiah 10:12 He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.

This reminds us once again how marvelous and great our God is. Why would we even think of deserting Him to serve vanity and follow after heathen practices? All worldly practices that ignore the teachings of God are heathen practices.

Some of these are adultery, fornication, theft, murder, abortion, loving the world, greediness, selfishness, unbelief and anything that departs from God's divine order for all creation. I might add that unbelief is the father of all the rest of the sins. If one does not believe in God's plan of salvation then he will not have the will power to keep himself from the sins that destroy the soul.

  • Jeremiah 10:13 When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures.

Isn't it troubling to think that we ignore the one who is giving us life. He sends the rain to water the ground, He makes the sun to shine and the earth to revolve just at the right speed. He is so wonderful. He allowed His only Son to die in our place in order to pay for our sins. He is sending Him back again at the appointed time. Not one part of His word will fail to come to pass.

  • Jeremiah 10:14 Every man is brutish in his knowledge: every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.
  • 15 They are vanity, and the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.

Again and again the writer emphasizes the vanity of serving idols and things other than the true and living God. Those things are of the wicked one, Satan. Satan cares not for any human being and desires that we perish. God cares about us, Satan does not.

  • Jeremiah 10:16 The portion of Jacob is not like them: for he is the former of all things; and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: The LORD of hosts is his name.

Yet in spite of Israel's rejection of God's word as a way to live, they are His chosen people to bring to pass salvation to the whole world through the Messiah, Jesus Christ. They will one day be gathered back to Him even though they now do not recognize their own Messiah. Through their rejection, the message of the gospel was given to the Gentile nations. We who accept Jesus' sacrifice and believe in Him will be part of the inheritance that is given to Israel. The promises given to Israel count for all who believe in Jesus Christ.

  • Jeremiah 10:17 Gather up thy wares out of the land, O inhabitant of the fortress.
  • 18 For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this once, and will distress them, that they may find it so.
  • 19 Woe is me for my hurt! my wound is grievous: but I said, Truly this is a grief, and I must bear it.
  • 20 My tabernacle is spoiled, and all my cords are broken: my children are gone forth of me, and they are not: there is none to stretch forth my tent any more, and to set up my curtains.

This is a result of rejecting God and serving idols. They were removed from their land. They gained it back temporarily but under Roman rule during the time of Christ but then lost it again in 70 AD for rejecting Christ. They were scattered all over the earth being persecuted and hated everywhere but now have gathered again in their homeland so that the latter day bible prophecies will come to pass.

  • Jeremiah 10:21 For the pastors are become brutish, and have not sought the LORD: therefore they shall not prosper, and all their flocks shall be scattered.

The pastors had failed to warn and teach God's word. They did not really care for their flock. Pastors today still have a great responsibility before God to speak the truth of the word and not fail in that.

  • Jeremiah 10:22 Behold, the noise of the bruit is come, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah desolate, and a den of dragons.

This prophecy came to pass as will all prophecies of the bible. If prophets and teachers do not tell the truth of God's word, people will tend to stray and follow whatsoever is accepted by the world at any time in history. Whatever the majority accepts as normal whether good or bad will be the common practice. The word of God is our only stable guide to keep us from straying from that which is good and for the good of mankind as a whole. There is no substitute. Even if we start out good, we will return to evil ways if we depart from the word of God. You can count on it.

  • Jeremiah 10:23 O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.

We cannot live godly in ourselves. We need help. We need to be filled with God's spirit that He gives to all those who Believe in the one He sent to save us from our sins. Jesus Christ. The human race cannot possibly do any good apart from the knowledge of God's ways.

  • Jeremiah 10:24 O LORD, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.

We must be willing to repent, turn from our own ways and follow God's ways. These ways are written down for us in the bible.

  • Jeremiah 10:25 Pour out thy fury upon the heathen that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name: for they have eaten up Jacob, and devoured him, and consumed him, and have made his habitation desolate.

Be careful; all of us who are not Jewish. Even though the nation of Israel as a whole are still without the knowledge of their Messiah, Jesus Christ, we have no right to persecute and blame them for the death of Jesus. Our sins caused the crucifixion of Jesus. Not the Jews themselves. He gave His life willingly as a sacrifice for every sin mankind has committed since the beginning of creation. In order for that sacrifice to count on our behalf, we have to believe and receive the Son of God into our own lives, turning from sin and trusting Him to save us.

We forget also that the church started with 12 Jews. The early church was Jewish. Without the Jews who followed Christ, there would be no church. Many Jewish people in these latter days have received Jesus as their Lord. We call them Messianic Jews. I rejoice to hear that. Many dwell in the land of Israel today as well as many parts of the world.
