Study of Jeremiah

Chapter 3

  • Jeremiah 3:1 They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man's, shall he return unto her again? shall not that land be greatly polluted? but thou hast played the harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, saith the LORD.

God was willing to forgive and start over with Israel. To forsake God and worship idols is the same as the situation where a woman goes out and commits adultery against her husband. It would be confusion for a wife who has been with another to return to her own husband. It would be equal to pollution. Yet God was willing to take Israel back into His fellowship and forgive their iniquities if they would only return to Him.

  • Jeremiah 3:2 Lift up thine eyes unto the high places, and see where thou hast not been lien with. In the ways hast thou sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and thou hast polluted the land with thy whoredoms and with thy wickedness.

Israel was God's chosen people. He chose them to bring the law of righteousness. He chose them to bring in the Messiah who was to be the savior of the whole world. Yet they refused to listen to God and chose to follow after the wicked ways of the nations that surrounded them.

  • Jeremiah 3:3 Therefore the showers have been withholden, and there hath been no latter rain; and thou hadst a whore's forehead, thou refusedst to be ashamed.

They refused to be ashamed of their sin even when God withheld rain. We see this same attitude in the book of Revelation but these were Gentile nations, not Israel.

  • Revelation 16:9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.
  • 10 And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,
  • 11 And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.

God will sent plagues and tribulation upon men to get them to see that they were in sin and needed to repent, yet they will refuse to repent and instead even cursed God.

I never could understand this attitude. God offers so much yet men prefer to stay in their sins and ignore God. We seek so many things and are always looking to be entertained and are never satisfied, yet God offers us so much more and better things than we have here and we refuse.

You might say that you know of Christians who have nothing but trouble. Some probably do suffer trouble and some even are persecuted for their faith. Yet, why do they continue serving God? Because the fellowship a person has when they walk with the Lord is not something we can describe.

Paul and Silas was beaten and thrown into jail, yet they kept on serving the Lord. They had a joy and inner peace that is indescribable. They also looked forward to the time when they would physically be with the Lord. They had the zeal of God to make sure they warn and tell all the people they could, that Jesus Christ was the only way of salvation.

Jesus can give us power to love our enemies, be kind to those who abuse us and forgive those who hurt us. Walking in the spirit and living a life in constant fellowship with the Lord is worth more and can't even be compared to a life in sin without God. If you are not saved today, you don't know what you are missing.

I know there are times when you don't feel anything because we walk by faith and not by sight or feeling but God does let you know that He is with you and never forsakes you.

  • Jeremiah 3:4 Wilt thou not from this time cry unto me, My father, thou art the guide of my youth?
  • 5 Will he reserve his anger for ever? will he keep it to the end? Behold, thou hast spoken and done evil things as thou couldest.
  • 6 The LORD said also unto me in the days of Josiah the king, Hast thou seen that which backsliding Israel hath done? she is gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there hath played the harlot.
  • 7 And I said after she had done all these things, Turn thou unto me. But she returned not. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it.
  • 8 And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also.
  • 9 And it came to pass through the lightness of her whoredom, that she defiled the land, and committed adultery with stones and with stocks.

Even though Judah saw what happened to Israel when they forsook God and served other false gods, they did the exact same thing. Actually they were even guiltier than Israel because they knew better. God sent them warning after warning. They had prophets who warned them continually but they preferred to hear those who preached lies and said words that made them feel better. They call it building self-esteem today.

Naturally we prefer to hear someone say something good about us than something bad. Now we only have the nation of Israel but at one time there was a nation of Israel that split. One was called Israel and one was called Judah. This happened after the death of King Solomon. The two sons of Solomon split the nation and it became two nations.

Israel fell into sin first and became under the power of Assyria. Judah fell under the power of Babylon but was later restored after 70 years and was Israel again but not under their own power. They were under the authority of the Medes and Persians, Greece and then Rome.

In 70 AD after their rejection of Christ as their Messiah, they lost their nation again until 1948. All this happened because of sin and breaking of the covenant of God. They later rejected the one God sent to bring them salvation and lost their nation entirely. Because of their rejection of the gospel, the gospel was sent to the Gentile nations, many of whom received Jesus Christ. Yet we must not boast but realize that Israel shall one day repent and believe the gospel. All nations who have persecuted Israel will be judged by God.

We should desire though to hear the truth even if the truth hurts at first. If a heart truly repents and changes his ways and turns to God, the end result is peace and joy.

  • Jeremiah 3:10 And yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah hath not turned unto me with her whole heart, but feignedly, saith the LORD.
  • 11 And the LORD said unto me, The backsliding Israel hath justified herself more than treacherous Judah.
  • 12 Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, Return, thou backsliding Israel, saith the LORD; and I will not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful, saith the LORD, and I will not keep anger for ever.
  • 13 Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou hast transgressed against the LORD thy God, and hast scattered thy ways to the strangers under every green tree, and ye have not obeyed my voice, saith the LORD.

All God asks is that they acknowledge their sin and return to Him. They same message is true today. We must acknowledge that we have sinned and turn to Christ to obtain salvation and eternal life. If we refuse to acknowledge our sin against God, we cannot be saved. In other words, we have to see our need to be saved in order to receive.  If we think we have never sinned and have nothing to repent of, we will not call upon the Lord for salvation. If a person is swimming, he doesn't call for help if he is not in danger of drowning.

The bible says, all have sinned. So in that case all need to be saved. All of us are drowning in the mire of sin that is defeating us. Jesus alone can take all that away. That is the reason He came and died for our sins in our place because He lived on the earth without sinning in any point so He didn't deserve to die. He paid the penalty of sin without deserving it. When we trust in Him and what He did for us, we are saved and can inherit eternal life. We then can receive God's Holy Spirit to abide within us.

  • Jeremiah 3;14 Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion:
  • 15 And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.

The more we turn to God, the more He will give us pastors and teachers of truth. If we want to hear lies, there will be plenty of teachers who will teach lies but the end result will be eternal death and separation from God in a burning hell that never ends. Why do you think God sent His own Son, Jesus Christ into the world to suffer and die for our sins? It was so that we could escape the judgment for sins (eternity in hell) and receive eternal life instead.

This eternal life was what we were meant to have when He first created us. Through the first Adam, paradise was lost and sin entered into the world. Through the second Adam, Christ, is freedom from sin and eternal life.

  • Jeremiah 3:16 And it shall come to pass, when ye be multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, saith the LORD, they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the LORD: neither shall it come to mind: neither shall they remember it; neither shall they visit it; neither shall that be done any more.
  • 17 At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the LORD; and all the nations shall be gathered unto it, to the name of the LORD, to Jerusalem: neither shall they walk any more after the imagination of their evil heart.

Here is a prophecy of the future when all nations shall recognize the Lord and follow Him. They will finally see who the Christ really is. The Jewish nation which rejected Jesus Christ will one day mourn because God will show them plainly that the one their ancestors rejected, was indeed the Christ sent to save them from sin and bring them life eternal.

There will be a new covenant that places the word of God within a person. We who believe in Jesus Christ have that now. The law is in our hearts and minds. The ark of the covenant is no longer necessary because there is a new covenant through faith in Jesus. This causes a person to become "born again" by the spirit of God. It is a way that we now can worship God in spirit and in truth such as Jesus describes in John 4. We no longer depend upon a place, a temple or even a priest. We can worship God individually by the spirit which He gives to all who believe.

  • Jeremiah 3:18 In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I have given for an inheritance unto your fathers.

Israel and Judah will not be separated in that day but joined together under one nation under God.

  • 19 But I said, How shall I put thee among the children, and give thee a pleasant land, a goodly heritage of the hosts of nations? and I said, Thou shalt call me, My father; and shalt not turn away from me.
  • 20 Surely as a wife treacherously departeth from her husband, so have ye dealt treacherously with me, O house of Israel, saith the LORD.

After giving them a vision of future days, the prophet returns with warnings and pleadings for them to return to the Lord. Maybe he foresaw the oppression from the Romans, the Spanish Inquisition, the time of Hitler, the time when they were scattered all over the face of the earth. And also the time when they would return and have a nation of Israel again. 1948 was a big year for bible prophecy.

  • Jeremiah 3:21 A voice was heard upon the high places, weeping and supplications of the children of Israel: for they have perverted their way, and they have forgotten the LORD their God.
  • 22 Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the LORD our God.

All this bad happened to Israel to show them that they had sinned and forsaken God. They rejected the Messiah sent to save them.

  • 23 Truly in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains: truly in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel.
  • 24 For shame hath devoured the labor of our fathers from our youth; their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters.
  • 25 We lie down in our shame, and our confusion covereth us: for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God.

Jeremiah recognized the reason for all the calamity that came upon Israel and tried to warn them but all he got was persecution and rejection.

Even though Israel is now a nation once again they still have not acknowledged their need to repent and accept the Messiah their ancestors rejected. More trouble will come to Israel until the day they see who their Messiah is. That day is soon to come.
