Joshua

Joshua 17

  • Joshua 17:1 There was also a lot for the tribe of Manasseh; for he was the firstborn of Joseph; to wit, for Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead: because he was a man of war, therefore he had Gilead and Bashan.
  • 2 There was also a lot for the rest of the children of Manasseh by their families; for the children of Abiezer, and for the children of Helek, and for the children of Asriel, and for the children of Shechem, and for the children of Hepher, and for the children of Shemida: these were the male children of Manasseh the son of Joseph by their families.
  • 3 But Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but daughters: and these are the names of his daughters, Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
  • 4 And they came near before Eleazar the priest, and before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the princes, saying, The LORD commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brethren. Therefore according to the commandment of the LORD he gave them an inheritance among the brethren of their father.

This is recorded in Numbers chapter 27:

  • Numbers 27:1 Then came the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph: and these are the names of his daughters; Mahlah, Noah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah.
  • 2 And they stood before Moses, and before Eleazar the priest, and before the princes and all the congregation, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying,
  • 3 Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not in the company of them that gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah; but died in his own sin, and had no sons.
  • 4 Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he hath no son? Give unto us therefore a possession among the brethren of our father.
  • 5 And Moses brought their cause before the LORD.
  • 6 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
  • 7 The daughters of Zelophehad speak right: thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father's brethren; and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto them.
  • 8 And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a man die, and have no son, then ye shall cause his inheritance to pass unto his daughter.
  • 9 And if he have no daughter, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his brethren.
  • 10 And if he have no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his father's brethren.
  • 11 And if his father have no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his kinsman that is next to him of his family, and he shall possess it: and it shall be unto the children of Israel a statute of judgment, as the LORD commanded Moses.

There are religions today that are very cruel to women. The Jewish religion lacked some of that. They held women in higher esteem than the heathen nations around them and many false religions in the world today. At the coming of Jesus our Christ women were elevated even more, not to the point of adoration and worship but to show them respect, kindness, care and salvation.

Women received salvation through faith in Christ, the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and the gifts of the spirit as well as men. God used women both in the Old and New Testaments. The desire of women to hear and even share the word of God is part of the gospel. Jesus commended Mary for wanting to sit and hear the word of God rather than help Martha in her many duties. Martha's work was appreciated. Men love the Martha types, but Mary was commended more because she had chosen the most necessary part and that was hearing the word of God.

I do not want to wander off on a rabbit trail here but I noticed that the women here were given an inheritance because there was no male to inherit. Usually women married and shared the inheritance with their husband so the inheritance usually went to the male unless there were not any. Still it shows that God had no problem giving land to women as well as men.

Prejudice against women is not from God but from the wicked one. Jesus is the prime example of how women are to be treated. Religions and cultures that are cruel to women or consider them property are usually false religious systems. Even if they use the name Christian.

  • Joshua 17:5 And there fell ten portions to Manasseh, beside the land of Gilead and Bashan, which were on the other side Jordan;
  • 6 Because the daughters of Manasseh had an inheritance among his sons: and the rest of Manasseh's sons had the land of Gilead.
  • 7 And the coast of Manasseh was from Asher to Michmethah, that lieth before Shechem; and the border went along on the right hand unto the inhabitants of Entappuah.
  • 8  Now Manasseh had the land of Tappuah: but Tappuah on the border of Manasseh belonged to the children of Ephraim;
  • 9 And the coast descended unto the river Kanah, southward of the river: these cities of Ephraim are among the cities of Manasseh: the coast of Manasseh also was on the north side of the river, and the outgoings of it were at the sea:
  • 10 Southward it was Ephraim's, and northward it was Manasseh's, and the sea is his border; and they met together in Asher on the north, and in Issachar on the east.
  • 11 And Manasseh had in Issachar and in Asher Bethshean and her towns, and Ibleam and her towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, and the inhabitants of Endor and her towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and her towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns, even three countries.
  • 12 Yet the children of Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of those cities; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.
  • 13 Yet it came to pass, when the children of Israel were waxen strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute; but did not utterly drive them out.

Originally they were supposed to drive out all Canaanites because of their great wickedness. It was a command of God. Why they couldn't drive them out at the point, we don't know. I will make some suppositions. Tired of war, perhaps they didn't do it at the right time and they got too weak and tired to drive them out or perhaps they just didn't want to deal with it. When the tribe became strong though they allowed them to dwell with them to benefit them by tribute.

All throughout Israel's history though they had a problem with the influence of those that worshipped other gods and idols. They became a stumbling block to them. Idolatry has always been a problem throughout the ages. If we reject the real God and get away from His holiness, we open the door toward all kinds of evil influences. It is to our hurt to do so.

  • Joshua 17:14 And the children of Joseph spake unto Joshua, saying, Why hast thou given me but one lot and one portion to inherit, seeing I am a great people, forasmuch as the LORD hath blessed me hitherto?
  • 15 And Joshua answered them, If thou be a great people, then get thee up to the wood country, and cut down for thyself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the giants, if mount Ephraim be too narrow for thee.
  • 16 And the children of Joseph said, The hill is not enough for us: and all the Canaanites that dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both they who are of Bethshean and her towns, and they who are of the valley of Jezreel.
  • 17 And Joshua spake unto the house of Joseph, even to Ephraim and to Manasseh, saying, Thou art a great people, and hast great power: thou shalt not have one lot only:
  • 18 But the mountain shall be thine; for it is a wood, and thou shalt cut it down: and the outgoings of it shall be thine: for thou shalt drive out the Canaanites, though they have iron chariots, and though they be strong.

I am going to include Adam Clarke's commentary on verse 18:

The outgoings of it shall be thine - Clear away the wood, occupy the mountain, and you shall soon be able to command all the valleys; and, possessing all the defiles of the country, you shall drive out the Canaanites, though they have chariots of iron: your situation will be advantageous, your numbers very respectable, and the hand of God will be upon you for good.

  1. From the whole history of the Israelites we find that it was difficult to please them; they had a dissatisfied mind, and hence were rarely contented. From the above account we learn that the children of Joseph were much inclined to quarrel with Joshua, because they had not such a lot as they wished; though they could not be ignorant that their lot, as that of the others, had been determined by the especial providence of God.

  2. Joshua treats them with great firmness; he would not attempt to alter the appointment of God, and he saw no reason to reverse or change the grant already made. They were both numerous and strong, and if they put forth their strength under the direction of even the ordinary providence of God, they had every reason to expect success.

  3. Slothfulness is natural to man; it requires much training to induce him to labor for his daily bread; if God should miraculously send it he will wonder and eat it, and that is the whole. Strive to enter in at the strait gate is an ungracious word to many; they profess to trust in God’s mercy, but labor not to enter into that rest: God will not reverse his purpose to meet their slothfulness; they alone who overcome shall sit with Jesus upon his throne. Reader, take unto thee the whole armor of God, that thou mayest be able to stand in the evil day, and having done all - to Stand. And remember, that he only who endures to the end shall be saved.

My comments: Endeavoring to be thankful, to be content with what one already has, to be faithful in what God calls us to and to be awaiting His Second coming will bring us more joy and fruitfulness than being greedy and always wanting more. Covetousness is a close kin to idolatry.  Idolatry involving images is covetousness but covetousness also is idolatry without images. It has hindered and ruined many nations as well as individual lives. Being fearful, unbelieving, murmuring and complaining kept the first generation of the Israelites from entering the land of promise. These things are written not so we can condemn Israel but to learn from their mistakes.   DC
