Judges Chapter 19

A Levite and His Concubine

  • Judges 19:1  And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Bethlehemjudah.
  • 2  And his concubine played the whore against him, and went away from him unto her father's house to Bethlehemjudah, and was there four whole months.
  • 3  And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak friendly unto her, and to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him into her father's house: and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.
  • 4  And his father in law, the damsel's father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they did eat and drink, and lodged there.
  • 5  And it came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the damsel's father said unto his son in law, Comfort thine heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward go your way.
  • 6  And they sat down, and did eat and drink both of them together: for the damsel's father had said unto the man, Be content, I pray thee, and tarry all night, and let thine heart be merry.
  • 7  And when the man rose up to depart, his father in law urged him: therefore he lodged there again.
  • 8  And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart: and the damsel's father said, Comfort thine heart, I pray thee. And they tarried until afternoon, and they did eat both of them.

He finds out later he should have left in the morning on the first day.

  • Judges 19:9  And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father in law, the damsel's father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end, lodge here, that thine heart may be merry; and to morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.
  • 10  But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus, which is Jerusalem; and there were with him two asses saddled, his concubine also was with him.
  • 11  And when they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.
  • 12  And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside hither into the city of a stranger, that is not of the children of Israel; we will pass over to Gibeah.
  • 13  And he said unto his servant, Come, and let us draw near to one of these places to lodge all night, in Gibeah, or in Ramah.
  • 14  And they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them when they were by Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin.
  • 15  And they turned aside thither, to go in and to lodge in Gibeah: and when he went in, he sat him down in a street of the city: for there was no man that took them into his house to lodging.
  • 16  And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even, which was also of mount Ephraim; and he sojourned in Gibeah: but the men of the place were Benjamites.
  • 17  And when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw a wayfaring man in the street of the city: and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?
  • 18  And he said unto him, We are passing from Bethlehemjudah toward the side of mount Ephraim; from thence am I: and I went to Bethlehemjudah, but I am now going to the house of the LORD; and there is no man that receiveth me to house.
  • 9  Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man which is with thy servants: there is no want of any thing.
  • 20  And the old man said, Peace be with thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street.
  • 21  So he brought him into his house, and gave provender unto the asses: and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.

This Levite had a heart of compassion it seems. Even though God provided a law of how to treat concubines which were secondary wives, the children of the first wife usually had the land inheritance and the children of concubines didn't always inherit their father's land. God did not condone anyone having concubines or more than one wife but did provide laws for how they were to be treated. In the New Testament we see that God clearly meant for one husband and one wife unless one of them died or else it was adultery. It does cause a lot of heart ache and trouble when we don't do God's best. In His mercy God allowed it but did not condone it.

The law also warns kings not to multiply wives to themselves. Solomon was an example of one who allowed all his wives to lead him into idolatry. King David also had trouble with wanting more than one wife. In the new testament a bishop was only to have one wife. So we see it is usually the 2nd wife or the less preferred wife who suffers from sadness and grief being second best. In the case of Jacob, there was rivalry between Leah and Rachel all their lives and really caused trouble for Joseph the son who was loved by Jacob more than all the other sons. Hagar in the of Abraham had to be cast out on her own for something she had nothing to do with. This caused her much grieve and the rivalry between Ishmael and Jacob whose name was changed to Israel continues even today.

It was a custom for travelers to find refuge in the home of someone who showed them kindness. In this case the story becomes similar to the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. The man who offered this Levite shelter did not want them to abide in the streets. Looks like these people strayed very far from the Lord as we shall see when we read further. They were of the tribe of Benjamin and surely knew better than this.

Gibeah's Crime

  • Judges 19:22  Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.

The word know here implies sexual acts of force upon the visitor. Hard to believe people people that once served God when they were delivered out of Egypt would get this evil after a few generations. This is the reason God told the Israelites to take the land given to them and not spare the inhabitants because they did things this evil and sacrificed their own children to idols. They failed to do this. It might sound cruel to us today but the extent of their wickedness had gotten to the point where God had to stop them from continuing it that evil. Now we see some copying after their works of evil from the tribe of Benjamin. Sons of Belial meant sons of the evil wicked one, the devil. They did Satanic acts which is an abomination to God. Men with men, rape, immorality, and lustful works of the flesh that God's word forbids.

  • Judges 19:23  And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly.
  • 24  Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing.
  • 25  But the men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.

This is so sad that people would do this awful thing. Their lust was so evil that they would gang rape one woman all night like this.

We can be so thankful for Jesus. No person ever was a greatert champion for women's rights like Jesus. He was kind to them and to children. If it wasn't for the coming of Jesus Christ, women would still be treated like objects of abuse in all countries, not just in the free world.

  • Judges 19:26  Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man's house where her lord was, till it was light.
  • 27  And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were upon the threshold.
  • 28  And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her up upon an ass, and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.
  • 29  And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel.
  • 30  And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds.

This is what happens when a nation or group of people forsake the real God and do what is right in their own eyes.

Romans chapter one shows us what happens to a society that refuses to retain God in their knowledge.

  • Romans 1:18  For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
  • 19  Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
  • 20  For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
  • 21  Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
22  Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
  • 23  And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
  • 24  Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
  • 25  Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
  • 26  For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
  • 27  And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
  • 28  And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
  • 29  Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
  • 30  Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
  • 31  Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
  • 32  Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

How sad it is to see a nation fall under the power of Satan who is out to steal, kill and destroy every soul and precious life he can get to follow him. DC
