Psalm Chapter 118

  • Psalm 118:1 O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: because his mercy endureth for ever.
  • 2 Let Israel now say, that his mercy endureth for ever.
  • 3 Let the house of Aaron now say, that his mercy endureth for ever.
  • 4 Let them now that fear the LORD say, that his mercy endureth for ever.

We stand, we are saved because of the mercy of the Lord.

  • 1Peter 2:10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

Not only is this mercy for Israel but for all who would dare to believe in Him. Through Jesus, all both Jew and Gentile can now have salvation. It is freely given and we do not do anything to earn it. It is given to us when we believe and receive Jesus into our lives.

  • Ephesians 2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
  • 5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
  • 6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
  • 7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
  • 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
  • 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
  • 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
  • 11 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;
  • 12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:
  • 13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

We are saved from sin and changed by the spirit of God so that we can start to produce good works. We can't do good works first to earn salvation but we are saved by His mercy when He sees our faith. We then are born again, saved from sin and can receive God's spirit inside our innermost being. Then and only then can we do good works to please God.

Our good works before Christ profit nothing and cannot save. We cannot boast because we did nothing to deserve God's salvation. After we are saved we start to do good things because His spirit abides in us. We still have a free will to choose to do wrong but God's spirit will convict if we do. We must always heed to this conviction because if we don't we could end up back where we started from.

We are now His (Christ's) workmanship. We belong to Christ so now we work to reflect what Jesus put within us by His Holy Spirit.

  • Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

Great is the mercy of God. So much is His mercy that He prefers mercy to sacrifice. Since God showed us mercy we are to show mercy to our fellowmen.

  • Matthew 12:7 But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.

  • Psalm 118:5 I called upon the LORD in distress: the LORD answered me, and set me in a large place.
  • 6 The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?

Perfect love casts out all fear. If we trust in the Lord, we really do not have to fear. We are in the Lord's hands.

  • Psalm 118:7 The LORD taketh my part with them that help me: therefore shall I see my desire upon them that hate me.

When the Lord is on our side, the enemies will not win.

  • Psalm 118:8 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.

Higher education is good if it is the right kind but if we put our faith and trust in man's education we will be deceived. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge. We must give heed to it first and measure man's knowledge against God's. If they clash drop man's and accept God's. If we don't do this we are headed for the great lie that will deceive men in the latter days. One of these lies the bible speaks of just may be evolution.

  • 2Thessalonians 2:7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.
  • 8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
  • 9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
  • 10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
  • 11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
  • 12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Who are those that will believe the great lie? It is those that reject truth and reject Jesus Christ. We become reprobate when we reject God.

  • Romans 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
  • 29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
  • 30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
  • 31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
  • 32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

It is so great to know the Lord and put trust in Him. What a delight to wake up each morning and lie down each night knowing the Lord has our back.

  • Psalm 118:9 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes.

In this many past elections in the United States I just cringed inside when I heard people tearing down each other, lying, deceiving, bashing and hating. Its the mercy of God that we don't get a president that is very evil since we never appreciate it when we have a good man in leadership.

  • Psalm 118:10 All nations compassed me about: but in the name of the LORD will I destroy them.

All nations will one day surround Israel to try to destroy them but God and the armies of Heaven will defeat the enemies. In present times enemies of the gospel try to suppress those that preach the gospel but they too will be defeated.

  • Psalm 118:11 They compassed me about; yea, they compassed me about: but in the name of the LORD I will destroy them.
  • 12 They compassed me about like bees; they are quenched as the fire of thorns: for in the name of the LORD I will destroy them.
  • 13 Thou hast thrust sore at me that I might fall: but the LORD helped me.
  • 14 The LORD is my strength and song, and is become my salvation.

Those that trust in God will be delivered both from natural enemies and with the spiritual enemies that try to ruin our faith in God. Literal armies are natural enemies but teachings of evolution, humanism, atheism, abortion rights, and other human philosophies are enemies of our souls.

  • Psalm 118:15 The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tabernacles of the righteous: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly.
  • 16 The right hand of the LORD is exalted: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly.
  • 17 I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD.

Everlasting life is promised to all who trust in the Lord and accept His salvation through His son, Jesus who is God that came in the flesh, lived, died and rose again to return to the place from which He came.

  • Psalm 118:18 The LORD hath chastened me sore: but he hath not given me over unto death.

Chastening means correction. We need God's correction daily. That is why He provided us with His word.

  • 2Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

  • Psalm 118:19 Open to me the gates of righteousness: I will go into them, and I will praise the LORD:
  • 20 This gate of the LORD, into which the righteous shall enter.
  • 21 I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation.

God has a place prepared for those that trust Him. Oh why do so many prefer to go their own ways and do their own thing when God has more than the world to offer?

  • Mark 8:36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

  • Psalm 118:22 The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.

Israel rejected the Messiah Jesus who was the Son of God. Jesus became head of the corner. The one that was rejected will be king of all.

  • Isaiah 45:23 I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.

  • Romans 14:11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.
  • 12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

The same people that mock, ridicule and say evil things about Jesus Christ will one day fear and bow before Him.

  • Psalm 118:23 This is the LORD'S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.
24 This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.
25 Save now, I beseech thee, O LORD: O LORD, I beseech thee, send now prosperity.
26 Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD.

Jesus came in the name of the Lord to bring salvation.

  • Matthew 21:9 And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.

  • Psalm 118:27 God is the LORD, which hath shewed us light: bind the sacrifice with cords, even unto the horns of the altar.
  • 28 Thou art my God, and I will praise thee: thou art my God, I will exalt thee.
  • 29 O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

The Lord is our salvation. He is all we have. He is our hope, our shield, our life. We need Him now more than ever.
