Psalm Chapter 123

A Song of degrees.

  • Psalm 123:1 Unto thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens.
  • 2 Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the LORD our God, until that he have mercy upon us.

Servants especially in days when there was poverty and not many self-reliant people, were totally dependent upon their masters.

We need to be totally trusting and dependent on God. Thank for a minute. In reality all we really have is in God. This life is very short. In light of eternity, if one lives to be 100 years old; it is still short compared to what lies ahead. The troubles and sorrows in this live are temporary. We need to take thought to our eternal salvation because that is really the only thing that matters. What we achieve here will not matter much unless we are able to turn souls to Jesus Christ for salvation.

To save one soul from eternal death is an accomplishment. All else will pass away and be forgotten.
When we accuse some people of being too wrapped up in the things of God, they have really chosen the good part that will last forever. We who remain wrapped up in the cares and riches of this life only are the ones in the dark so to speak.

The bible has a story to emphasize this fact:

  • Luke 10:40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
  • 41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
  • 42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

In our day and age, Martha would be the one considered good and Mary would be considered a slacker. We see from this passage that God does not always see as we see.

This does not mean that we do not work and support our families because the bible speaks clearly that those who neglect those things are infidels. We have to live in this present world, work and do necessary things but that should not be our main focus or goal. Jesus should be our first love and our main reason for living. In fact before we come to Jesus, life does not have much meaning. He gives us something to live for. When we die our natural deaths there is then nothing to fear for we pass from this life into another that is greater and eternal.

Had Jesus not have been teaching at the time of His visit, then Mary would have been free to help her sister Martha. When the word of God is being taught by one who is truly anointed of God, it is no time to be working in the kitchen. I personally would hate it if I knew an anointed speaker was speaking and I had to do chores.

To sum up this subject, the more we trust in God the more we actually have that counts. All have trouble, both sinners and believers alike but those that trust in the Lord have a comforter, a guide and a leader to get us through the bad times.

  • Psalm 123:3 Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us: for we are exceedingly filled with contempt.
  • 4 Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.

When we love the word of God and love righteousness, those that sin will grieve us continuously. To see one neglect the very thing that can save the soul is disheartening. This is what the world around us does not understand. They are confused when we don't join in their ways. When we live godly lives it makes them feel guilty even if we don't say anything. This is why the godly are persecuted. The godly make the ungodly feel condemned. When they receive our message and do not resist our testimony, they will not persecute but if they resist our message, they will get angry because the message of the gospel brings offense and makes the those that sin feel uncomfortable.

Yet if they refuse the good way and neglect the salvation of their souls, there is no other way to God and eternal life. They will die and be lost in hell forever. This message is unpopular. We are sometimes accused of hate-mongering. Like I have said many times though, what is hate? Is it telling the truth or allowing a soul to continue in sin and spend eternity in hell? When we correct our children it is to keep them from getting into trouble. They might not always like it and will rebel but in the long run they will turn out much better than if they were left to do as they please. It is not hate to correct wrong and point a soul in the right direction. We just must do it in love and with compassion, not in a holier-than-thou manner.  -DC
