Psalm Chapter 128

A Song of degrees.

  • Psalm 128:1  Blessed is every one that feareth the LORD; that walketh in his ways.
  • 2 For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.
  • 3 Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table.
  • 4 Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the LORD.
  • 5 The LORD shall bless thee out of Zion: and thou shalt see the good of Jerusalem all the days of thy life.
  • 6 Yea, thou shalt see thy children's children, and peace upon Israel.

Here we see what would bring peace to Israel and the entire world. Fearing the Lord. It is simple as that.

What is fearing the Lord? When we fear the law of our land, take for instance our traffic laws, we will obey them as much as possible. Fearing God is to have awe and respect for Him and His words. We can't say we fear God and neglect to obey His commandments.

If Israel would only obey and fear God, they would be at peace.

Israel had a special covenant with God. God gave them a law by the hand of Moses containing commandments. Because of transgressions and sins, they were given the ordinances of sacrifice, feasts of remembrance, dietary laws to point the way until the time God would send a savior or Messiah to usher in a better covenant.

The new covenant would be one that would save them from sin and put the law of God into their hearts by the power of the Holy Spirit. The new covenant gave the promise of eternal life to all who would accept and confess this prophet that was to come. Moses wrote of the prophet we now know as Jesus who is the Messiah. Had Israel received this Messiah and turned from sin, they would have peace even today.

The whole world would be at peace if they would only fear God.

Except for occasions when people are persecuted for righteousness sake, those that fear the Lord and walk in His ways will be at peace. The bible says that we are to follow peace with all men and holiness. If we do not we will not even see the Lord. We are not to be trouble makers, haters, or rioters. We are to live at peace and hurt no one. Sometimes we are persecuted for the way we live but other than persecution, the one who fears the Lord is promised good, not evil. If we do not fear the Lord and we ignore His word, then the hedge of protection and blessing are not guaranteed to be around us.

Because Jesus said that many would be offended at Him and will persecute and kill His followers, we realize that sometimes it would seem in outward appearance that peace is not ours, not because we are not fearing God but because of the gospel's sake. However there is still peace on the inside where it counts. Those that trust in God have peace even though outward circumstances are bad.

There is a peace in the midst of a storm that the world cannot have. This peace comes by the Holy Spirit which is given to those who believe in Jesus as savior. The Holy Spirit brings joy, peace, comfort, instruction, and many other things even if we are being persecuted. This is so great that it cannot even be explained properly. The disciples were always be filled with joy and with the Holy Ghost even though they were thrown in jail, killed and suffered hardship.

Nevertheless in times where there is a rest from persecution the believer who fears God will eat the fruit of his labor, have happiness and the children will indeed be as olive plants around the table.

In light of eternity though we see that all things suffered in this life is not worthy to be compared to the joy that we will have in the kingdom to come.

  • Matthew 5:10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
  • 11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
  • 12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Even though Jeremiah was a faithful and feared God, people hated him for the truth he spoke. That does not mean that the above verses of Psalm 128 did not apply to him but his reward was for eternity because he chose to subject himself to God and hazard his own life to obey what God told him to say. This caused him to be persecuted. He did not enjoy the things mentioned in this psalm while he lived in the earth but you can believe that he is enjoying them now and will for eternity.

The peace that passes understanding can be ours now and for eternity. -DC

Words of Jesus

  • John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
