Psalm Chapter 131

A Song of degrees of David.

  • Psalm 131:1  LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me.

We recognize that God is mighty and greater than all things. We cannot understand anything without His spirit to give us understanding. The writer here acknowledges that he is not praying with a heart of pride. God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble.

  • Luke 18:9 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:
  • 10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.
  • 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.
  • 12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.
  • 13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
  • 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Jesus told this story to illustrate the way to pray. Never with a haughty spirit that assumes oneself is greater than those who are considered sinners. Jesus is not endorsing sin here for we know that He taught repentance from sin when He saved sinners, He instructed them to go and sin no more. He was just illustrating the fact that the Pharisee tried to remind God of all His good works and was looking down on the publican as unworthy assuming he was greater than the publican. The publican on other hand knew he was a sinner that was unworthy and was asking for God's mercy. The publican ended his prayer justified rather than the Pharisee.

God just desires that we acknowledge our sins and repent. He wants to save. We can't trust in our own good works and good deeds to save us apart from faith in Jesus. All have sinned and we must admit our sin and repent in order to be saved. After we are saved we must be very careful not to be exalted in ourselves and forget that it was the mercy of God which saved us, not our own goodness.

  • Psalm 131:2 Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.
  • 3 Let Israel hope in the LORD from henceforth and for ever.

Not only Israel but the whole world needs to hope in the Lord for unless we go His way, we will not be saved from the wrath to come.

Yes, wrath is coming. Do you think we can get away with throwing God out of public schools, teaching evolution, denying His word as truth, killing unborn children, sexual immorality, and ignoring all God has to say about such things?

God allowed His own Son to suffer agonizing pain on the cross; enduring not only physical pain but allowed every one of our nasty sins to come upon the sinless, pure Son of God on that cross. That was worse than the physical pain. Every evil thing mankind has ever done was put on Jesus Christ as He hung on the cross. God allowed this so that all who would simply believe in this sacrifice and receive Jesus as Lord, would be saved and have eternal life.

After all that, do you think God will allow men to continue to ignore the word of God, ignore Jesus the Christ and mock His servants without punishment?

No. Teaching evolution in schools will never change the fact that God created the world. Taking the ten commandments down from the courthouses will not make the ten commandments null and void. Taking prayer out of school and bible reading out of the classroom will not take away the truth in the word they are forbidding.

Ignore God and society will be cursed and eventually destroyed. God doesn't have to lift a finger against us though, we will destroy ourselves. Satan seeks whom He may desire to destroy. If we do not acknowledge God, His protection will not be there when Satan decides to kill, steal and destroy.

We are destroying ourselves here in the United States. By allowing the wicked people to take away our heritage, we are casting away the only protection against the evil days to come. To return to God is our only hope. May I encourage every reader here to get out the word of God and diligently study it. Your life, your future and the salvation of your whole family depends on it. -DC
