Psalm Chapter 136

  • Psalm 136:1 O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth forever.
  • 2 O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth forever.

God is above all that in the past, present or future is called a god. Every knee shall bow before the real God of all creation.

  • Psalm 136:3 O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth forever.

Truly His mercy endures forever. If it wasn't for His mercy, we would perish. The way of salvation would never had been provided. His word would not have been written in a volume of a book for us to read and understand. If it wasn't for His mercy, He would never have allowed God in the flesh, the Son of God, we call Jesus to be a sacrifice for our sins. He endured the cross that any and all who believe might be saved.

  • Psalm 136:4 To him who alone doeth great wonders: for his mercy endureth forever.

God has done many wonders in both the Old Testament and the New. The greatest wonder of all is the plan of salvation for all of mankind to escape the judgment of hell and enter into eternal life. A wonder that all of us was lost but through faith in Jesus all can be saved.

  • Psalm 136:5 To him that by wisdom made the heavens: for his mercy endureth forever.

Men seek for alternative explanations to the origin of the earth but no other explanation explains the cells, the enzymes, the DNA, and other things about the human body. No way could it have come about by accident.

  • Psalm 136:6 To him that stretched out the earth above the waters: for his mercy endureth forever.
  • 7 To him that made great lights: for his mercy endureth forever:

I see His mercy in darkness and in daylight. We need rest and we need light to live. He is good.

  • Psalm 136:8 The sun to rule by day: for his mercy endureth forever:
  • 9 The moon and stars to rule by night: for his mercy endureth forever.

Yet even at night we do not abide in total darkness.

  • Psalm 136:10 To him that smote Egypt in their firstborn: for his mercy endureth forever:

God did not allow the slavery of Egypt to continue. God eventually puts a stop to wrong.

  • Psalm 136:11 And brought out Israel from among them: for his mercy endureth forever:
  • 12 With a strong hand, and with a stretched out arm: for his mercy endureth forever.
  • 13 To him which divided the Red sea into parts: for his mercy endureth forever:
  • 14 And made Israel to pass through the midst of it: for his mercy endureth forever:
  • 15 But overthrew Pharaoh and his host in the Red sea: for his mercy endureth forever.

Had Pharaoh and the Egyptians repented, stopped the slavery and allowed the people to go, they would have been part of the wonders of God. They would have been saved and not suffered judgment. Their economy mattered more than mercy. They were dependent upon slaves for their wealth.

This happened in our southern United States. They used slavery to work the large plantations. There lifestyle depended on it. That is why they rich plantation owners (only 2% of the southern population) opposed setting the slaves free. Most while people in the south did not own slaves.

Moses could have been a ruler in Egypt. He could have enjoyed the prosperity of owning slaves but He chose to identify with his own people.

  • Hebrews 11:24 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter;
  • 25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;
  • 26 Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompense of the reward.

We all might have to make this choice to have good things now and lose out eternally or choose to identify with God's people and suffer loss materially. In the long run it is better to choose God's way. This is the opposite of today's prosperity gospel.

  • Psalm 136:16 To him which led his people through the wilderness: for his mercy endureth forever.
  • 17 To him which smote great kings: for his mercy endureth forever:
  • 18 And slew famous kings: for his mercy endureth forever:
  • 19 Sihon king of the Amorites: for his mercy endureth forever:
  • 20 And Og the king of Bashan: for his mercy endureth forever:
  • 21 And gave their land for a heritage: for his mercy endureth forever:
  • 22 Even a heritage unto Israel his servant: for his mercy endureth forever.
  • 23 Who remembered us in our low estate: for his mercy endureth forever:

This is still their heritage given by God. God has not cast away His people. They were only cut off temporarily until the time of the Gentiles are fulfilled. We can read the bible and understand.

  • Psalm 136:24 And hath redeemed us from our enemies: for his mercy endureth forever.
  • 25 Who giveth food to all flesh: for his mercy endureth forever.
  • 26 O give thanks unto the God of heaven: for his mercy endureth forever.

When we see rain upon a thirsting parched ground we see God's mercy. When we see an abundance of food after serious draught we see God's mercy. If we open our eyes and look each day, we will see God's mercy. God is good. DC
