Psalm Chapter 139

To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.

  • Psalm 139:1 O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me.
  • 2 Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.
  • 3 Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.
  • 4 For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.
  • 5 Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.
  • 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.

So true that God knows all about us. He sees everything and nothing is hid from Him. He sees our sin. We cannot hide it. He sees our good works. He knows whether our worship is sincere or whether we are distracted or just going through the motions. We never fool God.

  • Psalm 139:7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?
  • 8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.

I'm glad there is not place that God is not there. I would hate to think of myself being in a position that there was no help, no salvation and nothing. We see though from this psalm that heaven and hell was known of in the Old Testament before the coming of Christ who made the way for us to get to heaven.

  • Psalm 139:9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;
  • 10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
  • 11 If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.
  • 12 Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.
  • 13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.
  • 14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

God's creation of man was perfect in every way. Each person has a blueprint called DNA. God made every cell, every vein and every part of each one of us is known to Him. He made us alike, yet separate beings. It was only when sin entered the world through the disobedience of our first parents that genetic deforms and disease started to destroy what God created. Until the time of the resurrection when those who have obeyed God will receive new bodies, those defects will affect the body.

Disobedience destroyed the body and brought physical death to the body and potential spiritual death to the soul. The spiritual death to the soul is not total annihilation but means that the soul that is not saved is being captive in a place of no escape so that it cannot influence the world with sin. The soul that sins shall die, not the soul which is obedient to the word of God.

Disobedience destroys, obedience of God's Son, Jesus Christ called the second Adam makes alive. All who believe in this Son of God, called Jesus will be saved and escape the second death which is eternal. We enter into the obedience that Jesus did when we simply repent of sin and believe on Him to deliver us from sin. Sin kills, Jesus cleanses the sin and makes us alive. Now we are eligible to partake of the resurrection with new bodies that cannot die any more. Jesus makes that possible.

  • Psalm 139:15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
  • 16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.
  • 17 How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!
  • 18 If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.
  • 19 Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men.
  • 20 For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain.
  • 21 Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee?
  • 22 I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies.
  • 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:
  • 24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Christ made a way for those wicked to be free but many ignore this way and choose unrighteousness. In doing so judgment will eventually come upon them. God will truly lead us in the way everlasting as the last verse states if we believe and accept the way out God has provided for us. That bridge, that path, that straight and narrow way is Jesus Christ.

  • John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

The only way mankind can be reconciled with the Father, who is the only real God, is to receive the Son. The Son made the sacrifice and bore our sins in His death on the cross. When He was resurrected He triumphed over death and all who believe will also triumph over death. He is the only way. A price had to be paid and sin had to be paid for by a sinless person. The only person that has ever lived without sin is Jesus.

Don't take my word for anything in these bible studies. Read the bible and study for yourself. Never trust your salvation and eternal life to any mortal man or woman. Only God can save and assure your eternal destiny. Read and understand. Be as the Bereans in the book of Acts and search out everything yourself in prayer also for God to reveal to you truth.

We depend too much on great personalities to lead us when we have eyes to read and understand. It's much easier to let someone else do the praying and studying and depend on them rather than  take time to do it ourselves. Yet we must do this. No man can save us, only God. That is why there are so many religions, cults and sects that are full. This is because we don't search for God ourselves but depend on our leaders to tell us truth.

We can love, follow and support our church leaders but only as they love, follow and serve Jesus Christ. God supplied us with the word printed in many languages, let us take advantage of it and not be deceived. Eternal life is too important to neglect God's word. Once you pass from this life to the next there is no way to get back. Now is the accepted time and now is the day of salvation.  DC
