Psalm Chapter 29

A Psalm of David.

  • Psalm 29:1  Give unto the LORD, O ye mighty, give unto the LORD glory and strength.
  • 2 Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.

Could we ever give God enough glory if we started now and continued throughout eternity? True holiness has a beauty that others will see. It may effect the outward appearance but true holiness is deep within a person. It reflects their character and radiates out toward others in their daily walk. We need more than just religion, we need the very Spirit of God bringing forth holiness in our everyday life.

  • Hebrews 12:14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

Peace and holiness are attributes of the Holy Spirit's dwelling in the individual believer. It is necessary to have before we can ever see the Lord.

The first step to this is to repent of sin and receive Jesus Christ into our lives, then He fills us with His Holy Spirit and as we yield to the Holy Spirit daily, He will place within us the love of God which will bring forth holiness and peace in our lives.

If you see Christians who do not live this way, either they have not yet come to Jesus for salvation or they are not yielding to the Holy Spirit after they have been saved. We still have our free will to choose after salvation comes into our lives and we can choose to follow God or return to sin any time. I pray that we choose to follow God and dwell with Him.

The definition of holiness is the state of being holy, pure, with integrity of moral character, free from sin, sanctified and being like God or walking in godliness. This is impossible without the Holy Spirit within our hearts as believers in Jesus Christ. We need daily to seek God that we may walk in the Spirit and walk in holiness.

  • Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

The power of the Holy Spirit gives us victory over the flesh if we yield to the Holy Spirit given to us.

  • Psalm 29:3 The voice of the LORD is upon the waters: the God of glory thundereth: the LORD is upon many waters.
  • 4 The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is full of majesty.
  • 5 The voice of the LORD breaketh the cedars; yea, the LORD breaketh the cedars of Lebanon.
  • 6 He maketh them also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young unicorn.
  • 7 The voice of the LORD divideth the flames of fire.
  • 8 The voice of the LORD shaketh the wilderness; the LORD shaketh the wilderness of Kadesh.
  • 9 The voice of the LORD maketh the hinds to calve, and discovereth the forests: and in his temple doth every one speak of his glory.
  • 10 The LORD sitteth upon the flood; yea, the LORD sitteth King forever.

How we need His voice again in our own lives, in our families, in our churches, in our countries. Surely He should be welcomed as the supreme sovereign God in our whole universe. No matter how things look at this present time, as I said previously, we can walk in the Spirit and have daily fellowship with the Lord. We do not have to be alone and walk in darkness. We do not have to become like the world around us. God gave us His Holy Spirit so that we can be like Him.

Remember these verses about the voice of the Lord. Surely His voice is still present. He is not sleeping while the world gets worse and worse. He said that these things will happen.

  • 2Timothy 3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
  • 2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
  • 3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
  • 4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

His voice is still heard above all those things.

  • Psalm 29:11 The LORD will give strength unto his people; the LORD will bless his people with peace.

Those that seek the Lord instead of following the ways of the world will receive strength and blessing from God. The word blessing is seen by some in modern times different than when I was a child. When we thought of being blessed by the Lord, we thought of spiritual blessings. We thought only of His presence. And truly those that seek the Lord will be blessed with His Spirit and His presence.

Now when people speak of God's blessings, many think of material things. When they say, "God has blessed me with a new house, a good job." If that was the case, then God blesses the unsaved and the wicked also. I do believe there is a blessing that comes from giving as we obey the spirit of God in our giving. The joy we receive from giving brings the greatest blessing far more than the material blessing we receive.

We need to desire more of His presence rather than the things of this life which pass away. I pray that God increases us financially so that we have more to give away. It is such fun to give to a ministry knowing that my giving is going to further the gospel or help the poor. That is the real blessing that comes from giving. When we let go of our possessions and cast them upon the waters giving them to someone else, it is really a joy because we are trusting in God to supply our need and not holding onto the things of this life. To be blessed spiritually is the things to seek. To only think of God's blessings as material things and money is to rob ourselves of the true riches and that is the presence of God continually in our daily life.

The wealth teaching is dangerous. Here is the reason:

It shuts out the poor and makes them feel like they do not have faith or are not favored of God. This is just the opposite of the teachings of Jesus Christ.

  • Revelation 2:8 And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive;
  • 9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
  • 10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.

We see here that this church in Smyrna was poor in material things but rich in the things of the spirit. Jesus commended them.

  • Revelation 3:14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;
  • 15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
  • 16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
  • 17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

The church in Laodicea was rich in material things but poor spiritually. Jesus warned them that they were in danger of losing what little they had. Jesus did not promise us that everyone would be rich in this world's goods. Some just may be rich but they have a greater responsibility to help the poor if they are. I say this but will add. If any are rich, willing giving of their substance will be blessed. However I do not believe the government has a right to tax them more on something they earned. It seems like the government punishes the rich for working hard and becoming rich in the process. Giving should be from their hearts not forced high taxation on anyone because they happen to be rich.

  • Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

We are to seek God first and trust Him for the other things. Trust Him to give us what we can handle and use what we have for His glory. We must keep in mind though that the true blessings of God is spiritual and deep within the soul. Seek the Holy Spirit, seek righteousness and seek these things daily.

  • Matthew 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

What shall we be filled with? Not riches of this world but the riches of God. The righteousness of Jesus Christ and His Holy Spirit. The things of the world will cause of trouble, the things of God bring everlasting life, not only to ourselves but others also.  -DC
