Psalm Chapter 33

  • Psalm 33:1 Rejoice in the LORD, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright.

Our worship definitely should include praise. The Lord paid a great price for our salvation. He deserves all the praise that we can give Him and more both in our private lives and in congregations gathered in His name.

  • Psalm 33:2 Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings.

Here is see musical instruments used in praise to our God. Music is a wonderful way to worship God. We must be careful in this day of the emphasis being on entertainment, that we do not place too much emphasis on the musicians and singers but it is good to worship God in music and songs as well as praying alone somewhere without music. Sometimes music may not be available. Of course we can always sing but there are times when we may have to worship silently.

I believe God delights in the melody of song that comes from deep within our soul and spirit. I love hearing the sound of a whole congregation of people singing unto the Lord.

  • Psalm 33:3 Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.

We can use our talents and skills for the glory of God. God gives us talent and it pleases Him when we use that talent for worshipping Him.

  • Psalm 33:4 For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth.

I love this verse for it reminds us that the word must not be neglected in our worship. The word is what corrects us, teaches us and gives us the strength to resist temptations. The word instructs us in the ways of God. The word gives us wisdom to help others. Without the word, our conversion will not last very long. Praise and worship along with the great teaching of God's word will edify the believers, draw sinners to God and strengthen our faith. It encourages those that mourn, enlightens the heart of those that are rejoicing and just makes us stronger in walk with God.

  • Psalm 33:5 He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the LORD.

We learn righteousness and the correct kind of judgments when we study the word. We can also see the goodness of the Lord in looking at the creation and how the Lord provided it for us to live within it. Unless things are wrecked with storms, tragic events and wars, the earth is perfect in every way. It is the rebellion of mankind against God that opens the door to the dangerous catastrophic things invading our planet.

  • Psalm 33:6 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

The word will last forever and is greatly needed in our daily lives. The study of the word keeps us from error and false doctrine. It lights our pathway.

  • Psalm 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

Strength, power, guidance, comfort, direction, and stability comes from receiving the word of God along with the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

  • Psalm 33:7 He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses.
  • 8 Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.

Never should we allow the fear of God to depart from our midst. This is necessary to keep us from straying off the path of righteousness.

  • Psalm 33:9 For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.

What God says, will come to pass. We must look to Him before all others. His word needs to be our delight, our mainstay and our source of strength.

  • Psalm 33:10 The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect.

Look about you, it doesn't matter what the unbelievers say, do or feel. It will come to nothing in the long run. Those that put their whole trust in the Lord will stand firm and stand before God blameless. Those that refuse God and do evil will not stand and will perish eternally.

  • Psalm 33:11 The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

The counsel of the Lord will stand forever. Should we not want to stand with Him and not be with those that perish?

  • Psalm 33:12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.

We can see from studying history that nations which reject God or have false gods have the most poverty, disease and hardships. This is because the god of this world or Satan has the most control where there is no fear of God. God's hand of protection will only be among those that desire Him to be among them. He does not go where He is not wanted. The godly will at times suffer hardships but the presence of the Lord is with them at all times. Jesus said that He will never leave or forsake those that trust in Him.

  • Psalm 33:13 The LORD looketh from heaven; he beholdeth all the sons of men.
  • 14 From the place of his habitation he looketh upon all the inhabitants of the earth.
  • 15 He fashioneth their hearts alike; he considereth all their works.
  • 16 There is no king saved by the multitude of an host: a mighty man is not delivered by much strength.
  • 17 An horse is a vain thing for safety: neither shall he deliver any by his great strength.
  • 18 Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy;
  • 19 To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.
  • 20 Our soul waiteth for the LORD: he is our help and our shield.
  • 21 For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name.
  • 22 Let thy mercy, O LORD, be upon us, according as we hope in thee.

This is so true. It is vanity to put trust in a multitude, a great army, horses, money, or any other thing on the face of the earth. These things will pass away. These things can be stolen, loved ones may pass away, earthly things can not be trusted in. Only trust in God is a sure way to be safe. He is a shelter to those that need shelter, He is a light to those in darkness, He is food to the hungry, He is hope to those in despair. God is our salvation and we need not look to another.

I don't care how great and powerful the nations of the world may become, the minute God says, they are finished, then they will be brought to nothing. God is the one we need to look to for salvation and strength. Read the back of the book. Those that trust in Jesus Christ, the Son of God sent to save the world, will be the winners. All others will perish because they refused the way of salvation paid for by the suffering and death of Jesus Christ.  -DC
