Psalm Chapter 90

A Prayer of Moses the man of God.

  • Psalm 90:1 Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations.
  • 2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

God is everlasting and has no beginning or an end. This may be hard for our minds to figure out but He is eternal. Our souls are also eternal. The body only dies at the point of death. The soul is the part that has to be saved from the eternal punishment of sin. The soul that comes to Jesus Christ for salvation can enter into eternal life.

The soul that rejects the sacrifice of Jesus to save the soul from sin will enter into eternal death which means eternal suffering for the punishment of sin. Sin takes us to this place called hell. Jesus came that we might have life and escape the penalty of death for sin. He paid the price for sin in His death on the cross over 2000 years ago. He is returning to finalize His plan of salvation and usher in a kingdom that will last forever with everlasting righteousness. To enter this kingdom, we have to get rid of sin first. Sin cannot enter the kingdom of God.

  • Psalm 90:3 Thou turnest man to destruction; and sayest, Return, ye children of men.

Destruction is the only way to stop sin from continuing forever. God has to be just and He must stop sin. This is why He sent Jesus to us. Return Ye children of men, simply means to repent and turn back to God. Jesus is the one God sent to make intercession and pay the supreme sacrifice for sin. The only way to enter into the future kingdom and be free from sin is through faith in Jesus. The moment Jesus comes into our lives, the kingdom of God comes within us. When the appointed time comes, which is only in the mind of God, none of us know when this will be, then will there be a literal visible kingdom in which Jesus our Christ will reign forever.

  • Psalm 90:4 For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.

It seems to be taking a long time for Jesus to return to us but in God's sight, it is but a day since Jesus walked the earth. He is returning at an appointed time. Until then we are to live for Him and spread the gospel into all the earth that many can be saved from sin. We can have the kingdom of God living within us now. We don't have to wait until He returns to walk in His presence. Through the Holy Spirit God, can come to us right this minute.

  • Psalm 90:5 Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which groweth up.

God brings judgment to those who refuse His word and ignores His commandments and testimonies.

  • Psalm 90:6 In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down, and withereth.
  • 7 For we are consumed by thine anger, and by thy wrath are we troubled.
  • 8 Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.
  • 9 For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told.
  • 10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

Because of sin the life of mankind was shortened. Men use to live far longer than 70 years. Sin separates us from God. Jesus brings us back to God. I wonder if they those last words in verse 10 is where they got the song, "I'll Fly Away." As soon as the body dies, the soul and spirit depart.

  • Psalm 90:11 Who knoweth the power of thine anger? even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath.
  • 12 So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

God can teach us to live each day in fruitfulness and abound in love and good works. We don't have to live in sin. Jesus is the way out of sin and into wholeness.

  • Psalm 90:13 Return, O LORD, how long? and let it repent thee concerning thy servants.

The cry here is for God to return and have mercy on mankind. This He does by sending to us Jesus to save us from sin.

  • Matthew 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

  • Psalm 90:14 O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
  • 15 Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us, and the years wherein we have seen evil.
  • 16 Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children.

This prayer was answered when Jesus came to us in the flesh and was born of Mary.

  • Psalm 90:17 And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.

This is answered by receiving salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. When we repent of sin and receive Jesus into our lives, He sends us His Holy Spirit to abide within us and then the work of our hands will be establish and bring forth fruit. Glory to God for His unspeakable gift of eternal life and a life in the Spirit. We do not have to be a slave to sin and destruction. We can be free and have a new life through Jesus Christ. -DC
