2nd Timothy

2Timothy 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,

I don't know how many times I've read that above verse and missed what Paul was saying. The promise of life which is in Christ Jesus.

Jesus died to give us eternal life. If there was any other way to grant life to the human race, God would have done it. The new politically correct acceptance of all religions is not spiritually correct. Yes, we accept all religions in a sense that all people from all religions have a freedom of religion and freedom to choose how they worship. I would never be party to denying another religion any human rights. But in truth however, if there was another way to grant the human race eternal life and victory over death, God would not have allowed His own Son, Jesus Christ to die, take our sins upon himself, and be killed for our filthy sins.

When Jesus rose from the dead, it gave us the hope of eternal life. To receive this eternal life, all we have to do is be willing to turn from our sins and believe in Him. Believing on Him is simply believing His words and all He did on our behalf. The free gift of salvation is only ours if we believe these things. We have to believe these things in order to be willing to allow God to change us and give us His Holy Spirit.

John 7:38 He that believeth on me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

This living water is the Holy Spirit given to those that believe and receive Him (Jesus). It is also given to those that obey Him. What a beautiful promise and hope for all of us.

Isaiah 44:3 For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:

To deny this gift of God is to deny ourselves eternal life. Forsake sin, believe in Jesus. It is so simple a child can believe and be saved. To say that any other way or religion can save, is to take lightly or ignore the sacrifice Jesus made on our behalf and lose the salvation God provided for us.

2Timothy 1:2 To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

This letter is written to Timothy and given to us for exhortation and comfort.

2Timothy 1:3 I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;

How can Paul have a pure conscience? Didn't he persecute and kill innocent believers in Jesus Christ?

Yes he did, but now he is a person that in God's eyes, never sinned or done wrong. All his past sins were washed away by the blood of Jesus Christ which was shed upon the cross. No matter what our past may be, we can be cleansed from all sin by faith in Jesus Christ.

1John 1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Paul prayed night and day for Timothy and for all the people he preached to. One of the best ways to learn to love one another is to pray for one another and desire good for a fellow believer like we would want for ourselves.

2Timothy 1:4 Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;

We need to rejoice along with the angels of God when just one sinner repents and is saved by faith in Jesus Christ but also have joy when we see a group of believers who stay faithful to the Lord, repent of any error and contend for the faith they originally had.

2Timothy 1:5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

Paul rejoiced to see Timothy continue in the faith that his mother and grandmother had before him.

2Timothy 1:6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.
7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

We are not to fear those that would oppose us or our preaching of the gospel.

2Timothy 1:8 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;

If we see one who is persecuted for their testimony, we should be identified with them and not withdraw our moral support for them because of the fear of men.

2Timothy 1:9 Who hath saved us, and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

God originally meant for all mankind to be saved in the beginning. It is our own choices and rejection of the gospel that causes us to miss out on eternal life.

2Timothy 1:10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:

All of us have a temporary physical death but we have the hope of the resurrection of the body if we maintain our faith in Jesus Christ. The soul and spirit of any believer already has eternal life abiding within him or her already. When the body dies, the soul and spirit go to God to await the resurrection.

2Corinthians 5:6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:
7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

There are so many that have not yet understood all the promises and goodness of God. We must get this word out. What we see in this life is not our only hope.

2Timothy 1:11 Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.

First we thank God for His mercy in allowing us to hear the gospel, believe and be saved, then we can thank Jesus for being faithful unto death to pay for our salvation, and then we can thank our beloved apostle Paul for being determined to spread the gospel to the Gentiles. Because of the faithfulness of those that went before us, we have heard and have believed.

We can be thankful that Jesus prayed for us:

John 17:20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

Jews and Gentiles are to be united in Christ:

John 10:15 As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.
16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

I rejoice that this is already happening as I write. Although the gospel was first given to the Jews, that stopped for a season through their rejection of the gospel as a nation. The first true believers were Jews. Now in this day and age, the late 1900s up until today, in May 2025, many Jews are becoming believers in their Messiah, Jesus Christ or to say the name in Hebrew, Yeshua. We should rejoice and be glad for this; for God is making one fold under one shepherd, Jesus Christ just as the scripture says.

2Timothy 1:12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
13 Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
14 That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.

Continue in the word, in much prayer and faithful until all things are fulfilled and Jesus returns. Occupy until He comes.

We do not have to be part of the falling away. Losing our first love, substituting our own doctrines in place of the word of God and then smiting our fellow servants is a sign of falling away.

This began to happen not long after the death of the apostles when some did not stay true to the word and failed to stay full of the Holy Spirit. We need to pray and stay faithful so that it not happen again. Its bad enough to be persecuted by unbelievers and the pagans, but to be persecuted by others who claim to believe in Jesus Christ is a crying shame, yet that is just what happened.

John 16:2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.
3 And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.

Remember these words of Jesus. If you persecute someone because of their faith in Jesus, you do not know the Father and you do not know the Son, Jesus Christ.

God never gave anyone permission to kill in the name of Christ. The only people He allowed to use force and kill was Israel under the Old covenant. It was never given to the church or to anyone after Jesus came. I believe it is okay to fight against an army coming against our nation but we are not to kill in the name of Christ or fight people who believe different than we do. That is not preaching the gospel. You cannot force a sinner to become a born again child of God. It takes the spirit of God to do that.

Jesus rebuked His own disciples when they got angry at those that rejected Jesus.

Luke 9:54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elijah did?
55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.
56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.

If our words are rejected, we must continue on and go somewhere else. Never use intimidation, force and physical harm to spread the gospel. It's not the true gospel if it is done that way.

2Timothy 1:15 This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.
16 The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain:
17 But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me.
18 The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.

Being kind to someone who brings the gospel will bring its own reward in the day Jesus returns. Now we must faithfully occupy until that day by watching, praying, spreading the gospel and obeying the Holy Spirit in all things. DC
