Nehemiah Chapter 10

The People Who Sealed the Covenant

  • Nehemiah 10:1  Now those that sealed were, Nehemiah, the Tirshatha, the son of Hachaliah, and Zidkijah,
    2  Seraiah, Azariah, Jeremiah,

    9  And the Levites: both Jeshua the son of Azaniah, Binnui of the sons of Henadad, Kadmiel;
    10  And their brethren, Shebaniah, Hodijah, Kelita, Pelaiah, Hanan,
    11  Micha, Rehob, Hashabiah,
    12  Zaccur, Sherebiah, Shebaniah,

    15  Bunni, Azgad, Bebai,
    16  Adonijah, Bigvai, Adin,

    18  Hodijah, Hashum, Bezai,
    19  Hariph, Anathoth, Nebai,
    20  Magpiash, Meshullam, Hezir,

    24  Hallohesh, Pileha, Shobek,
    25  Rehum, Hashabnah, Maaseiah,
    26  And Ahijah, Hanan, Anan,
    27  Malluch, Harim, Baanah.

Signing covenants may be a good thing but oh my what a difference we have now through Jesus Christ. Now our covenant is individual from within when we believe in Jesus and the Holy Spirit comes within us to make a change from the inside out. It is so different. But the days of Nehemiah was years before the first coming of Christ to give Himself as a sacrifice for sins.

We who come to Christ for salvation will be safe from evil forever. It's ours for the receiving now. Before Christ, they made sacrifices and covenants that pointed to the time of Christ but the flesh was weak. We see from reading the bible how they kept renewing themselves to God only to fall away after a few generations. We have a good way now if only people would come to Jesus and receive what God has for them.

The Obligations of the Covenant

  • Nehemiah 10:28  And the rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the porters, the singers, the Nethinims, and all they that had separated themselves from the people of the lands unto the law of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, every one having knowledge, and having understanding;
  • 29  They clave to their brethren, their nobles, and entered into a curse, and into an oath, to walk in God's law, which was given by Moses the servant of God, and to observe and do all the commandments of the LORD our Lord, and his judgments and his statutes;
  • 30  And that we would not give our daughters unto the people of the land, nor take their daughters for our sons:
  • 31  And if the people of the land bring ware or any victuals on the sabbath day to sell, that we would not buy it of them on the sabbath, or on the holy day: and that we would leave the seventh year, and the exaction of every debt.

This would be so great if people would keep this and stay faithful to God. How glorious, what peace they would have. To teach this to their children and their children's children throughout all generations, would be so awesome. No weapon formed against people like that would never succeed. Perhaps they would have believed in their Messiah and recognized Him when He came the first time if they had continued with the Lord and not have fallen aside after Idols.

John the Apostle speaking of Jesus:

  • John 1:11  He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
  • 12  But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
  • 13  Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Through Jewish people's rejection of Jesus as their Messiah, the glorious gospel came to the Gentiles through Paul the Apostle. The message of Jesus has spread and is still being spread all over the world. His return is next on the prophetic timeline.

  • Nehemiah 10:32  Also we made ordinances for us, to charge ourselves yearly with the third part of a shekel for the service of the house of our God;
  • 33  For the shewbread, and for the continual meat offering, and for the continual burnt offering, of the sabbaths, of the new moons, for the set feasts, and for the holy things, and for the sin offerings to make an atonement for Israel, and for all the work of the house of our God.
  • 34  And we cast the lots among the priests, the Levites, and the people, for the wood offering, to bring it into the house of our God, after the houses of our fathers, at times appointed year by year, to burn upon the altar of the LORD our God, as it is written in the law:
  • 35  And to bring the firstfruits of our ground, and the firstfruits of all fruit of all trees, year by year, unto the house of the LORD:
  • 36  Also the firstborn of our sons, and of our cattle, as it is written in the law, and the firstlings of our herds and of our flocks, to bring to the house of our God, unto the priests that minister in the house of our God:
  • 37  And that we should bring the firstfruits of our dough, and our offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, of wine and of oil, unto the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and the tithes of our ground unto the Levites, that the same Levites might have the tithes in all the cities of our tillage.
  • 38  And the priest the son of Aaron shall be with the Levites, when the Levites take tithes: and the Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes unto the house of our God, to the chambers, into the treasure house.
  • 39  For the children of Israel and the children of Levi shall bring the offering of the corn, of the new wine, and the oil, unto the chambers, where are the vessels of the sanctuary, and the priests that minister, and the porters, and the singers: and we will not forsake the house of our God.

Whether in the Old covernant or the New one through Christ, it is good to remember not to forsake the house of God, not to forsake the assembling of ourselves together to preach, teach, worship and learn of God and His Word.

Remember the Levites did not have an inheritance like the other tribes so the Levites lived by the tithes of the tribes that owned land. The Levites had cities among the different tribes. So the tribes  had to pay tithes to the Levites for the service of the Lord. They are now limited and do not have the land they had at first, but they are doing what they can to support the Levites they did have at this time in history and to redo the keeping of the law, observing the Sabbath and returning to the original law under Moses.

By the time of Christ's first coming which would have been around 400 years later, they were under this law but under the Roman Empire as well. They were really not free but under the rule of Caesar Augustus. By that time they added to the law or took away from it and were not really living right except for a few like Zacharias the priest and father of John the Baptist and his wife Elizabeth, also Mary and Joseph, the mother and step father of Jesus. Another faithful one was Simeon to whom the Holy Spirit revealed that he would not die until he saw the Lord's Christ. He saw Jesus when Mary and Joseph brought Him to the temple to offer a sacrifice according the law of Moses. Then there was Anna a prohetess of the tribe of Aser who came at that time to give thanks to the Lord for Jesus and the redemption He was to bring.

The Pharisees still kept the letter of the law but not the spirit of the law by the time of the first coming of Jesus. That is why they were offended when Jesus healed the sick on the Sabbath day. DC
