Numbers Chapter 7
- Numbers 7:1 And it came to pass on
the day that Moses had fully set up the tabernacle, and had
anointed it, and sanctified it, and all the instruments thereof,
both the altar and all the vessels thereof, and had anointed
them, and sanctified them;
- 2 That the princes of
Israel, heads of the house of their fathers, who were the
princes of the tribes, and were over them that were numbered,
offered:
- 3 And they brought their
offering before the LORD, six covered wagons, and twelve oxen; a
wagon for two of the princes, and for each one an ox: and they
brought them before the tabernacle.
- 4 And the LORD spoke unto
Moses, saying,
- 5 Take it of them, that
they may be to do the service of the tabernacle of the
congregation; and thou shalt give them unto the Levites, to
every man according to his service.
- 6 And Moses took the
wagons and the oxen, and gave them unto the Levites.
- 7 Two wagons and four oxen
he gave unto the sons of Gershon, according to their service:
- 8 And four wagons and
eight oxen he gave unto the sons of Merari, according unto their
service, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.
- 9 But unto the sons of Kohath he gave none: because the service of the sanctuary
belonging unto them was that they should bear upon their
shoulders.
- 10 And the princes offered
for dedicating of the altar in the day that it was anointed,
even the princes offered their offering before the altar.
- 11 And the LORD said unto
Moses, They shall offer their offering, each prince on his day,
for the dedicating of the altar.

- 89 And when Moses was gone
into the tabernacle of the congregation to speak with him, then
he heard the voice of one speaking unto him from off the mercy
seat that was upon the ark of testimony, from between the two cherubims: and he spoke unto him.
We are reading here of Israel in their first
love for the Lord. They were making offerings and obeying the
commandment of the Lord concerning providing for the Levites who
were chosen to bear the ark and do the service of the tabernacle.
The rest of Israel complied and brought
offerings and were in obedience to the ordinances that were set in
place by God Himself.
At this time God was dwelling in their midst
and everything was going smoothly. To obey God brings peace. He
really wants to dwell with His creation and through Jesus the way
was made perfect. While animal sacrifices were a type of that which
was to come in their future, they could not really make the people
without sin. They would be forgiven by the ordinances and offerings
but when they sinned again, they would have to keep doing the
rituals of the law. Through the new covenant, Jesus
makes it possible to dwell with His creation by the Holy Spirit. There
is a time coming when God will dwell with His creation forever in
person. The difference is that the way of salvation that was
made through Jesus, was for all who believed, not just Israel.
Many things had to be fulfilled before that
can occur.
We see here that God was dwelling with Israel
and spoke to them upon the mercy seat of the ark. This must have
been awesome to hear. God no longer dwells with Israel this way.
They lost this relationship first when they sinned against God and
they were taken captive to Babylon. They lost out again when God
sent Jesus to bring them the message of eternal life and cleansing
of sin but they rejected Jesus. In 70 AD they lost their nation for
over 2000 years until 1948.
1948 has significance. It was the beginning
of God calling Israel back to Himself. God will dwell with Israel
again but first they will have to acknowledge the King of Kings and
Lord of Lords, Jesus Christ. There is a time coming according to the
prophecies in Zechariah that Israel will mourn for Him whom their
ancestors had pierced.
- Zechariah 12:8 In that day
shall the LORD defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and he that
is feeble among them at that day shall be as David; and the
house of David shall be as God, as the angel of the LORD before
them.
- 9 And it shall come
to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations
that come against Jerusalem.
- 10 And I will pour
upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem,
the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look
upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as
one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for
him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.
- 11 In that day shall
there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon.
This is the day that they will see that one
who called
Jesus that their ancestors rejected was truly the Messiah who was to
reunite Israel back to God to whom they were separated because of
their sin.
Sin and rejection of God will separate us
from Him. This is true both for Israel, the church and the Gentile
nations. Sin and God cannot dwell together.
Getting back to this time in the wilderness
it is described here:
- Jeremiah 2:2 Go and cry in
the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; I remember
thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals,
when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was
not sown.
- 3 Israel was holiness
unto the LORD, and the firstfruits of his increase: all that
devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the
LORD.
At this time in history, Israel was holiness
to the Lord. The Lord dwelled among them. They lost this first love
because of unbelief and sin that entered the picture later.
Satan is out to steal, kill and destroy. He
hated Israel and wanted to destroy their relationship with God. He
hates the true Church and is out to pollute their message and
destroy their relationship with God also. When we yield to sin and reject
the truth, we are yielding to the will of Satan, not God.
More of ancient Israel's failure is described here:
- Psalm 106:6 We have sinned
with our fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have done
wickedly.
- 7 Our fathers
understood not thy wonders in Egypt; they remembered not the
multitude of thy mercies; but provoked him at the sea, even at
the Red sea.
- 8 Nevertheless he
saved them for his name's sake, that he might make his mighty
power to be known.
- 9 He rebuked the Red
sea also, and it was dried up: so he led them through the
depths, as through the wilderness.
- 10 And he saved them
from the hand of him that hated them, and redeemed them from the
hand of the enemy.
- 11 And the waters
covered their enemies: there was not one of them left.
- 12 Then believed
they his words; they sang his praise.
- 13 They soon forgot
his works; they waited not for his counsel:
- 14 But lusted
exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert.
- 15 And he gave them
their request; but sent leanness into their soul.
- 16 They envied Moses
also in the camp, and Aaron the saint of the LORD.
- 17 The earth opened
and swallowed up Dathan, and covered the company of Abiram.
- 18 And a fire was
kindled in their company; the flame burned up the wicked.
- 19 They made a calf
in Horeb, and worshiped the molten image.
- 20 Thus they changed
their glory into the similitude of an ox that eateth grass.
- 21 They forgot God
their savior, which had done great things in Egypt;
- 22 Wondrous works in
the land of Ham, and terrible things by the Red sea.
- 23 Therefore he said
that he would destroy them, had not Moses his chosen stood
before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, lest he should
destroy them.
- 24 Yea, they
despised the pleasant land, they believed not his word:
- 25 But murmured in
their tents, and hearkened not unto the voice of the LORD.
- 26 Therefore he
lifted up his hand against them, to overthrow them in the
wilderness:
- 27 To overthrow
their seed also among the nations, and to scatter them in the
lands.
Actually the whole message of salvation is
the same in both Old and New except in the New we are given the help
of the Holy Spirit to abide with us and teach us the way of
righteousness.
Unbelief is the greatest cause of a person
going back into sin. When we do not believe that God will judge sin
that is the first step to returning to sin. Remember if we don't
want to be separated from God we need to avoid unbelief that leads
to sin. Unbelief will come first.
It was unbelief that started this whole
thing. God told Adam and Eve not to partake of a certain tree in the
garden. Satan comes along and plants doubt and unbelief into Eve and
told her that God didn't really mean what He said.
Unbelief caused Israel to make a golden calf
when Moses was upon the mountain talking to God. They assumed Moses
was dead so they gave up and assumed God was no longer with them so
they made a false god.
Yet all this doesn't have to be. We can have
a right relationship with God. We can be free from sin. We can have
God dwelling with us in Spirit right now and literally in person
when Christ returns and all evil is put away forever.
- Revelation 21:1 And I saw a
new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first
earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
- 2 And I John saw the
holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven,
prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
- 3 And I heard a great
voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is
with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his
people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
- 4 And God shall wipe
away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more
death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any
more pain: for the former things are passed away.
- 5 And he that sat
upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said
unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
- 6 And he said unto
me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.
I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the
water of life freely.
- 7 He that overcometh
shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be
my son.
- 8 But the fearful,
and unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, and
whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall
have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and
brimstone: which is the second death.
This great time is coming but to enter this
place forever we must allow Jesus Christ to cleanse us from sin and
put the Holy Spirit within us. In other words we must be "born
again" by the spirit of God. -DC
