Psalm Chapter 119 Part E

LAMED

  • Psalm 119:89 . For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.

We may change but God's word never changes. We must consider this when we make comments like, "Times have changed," "We live in a modern age," "Customs are different now." God does not change, we do, and if something was a sin in 150 AD, it would still be sin now in the sight of God.

  • Psalm 119:90 Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth.

Nevertheless, God is faithful to all generations. We can rejoice that He brought His word down through the ages unto our own generation. Those that faithfully left all to follow God and preached the gospel even if threatened with persecution, allowed us in this modern generation to hear the beautiful message of the gospel. Thank you so much dear Lord for remembering me.

  • Psalm 119:91 They continue this day according to thine ordinances: for all are thy servants.
  • 92 Unless thy law had been my delights, I should then have perished in mine affliction.

We will probably never know for sure until we get to Heaven, but there are probably many times when God has saved His followers from dying before our appointed time.

  • Psalm 119:93 I will never forget thy precepts: for with them thou hast quickened me.
  • 94 I am thine, save me; for I have sought thy precepts.

In order to understand the word of God, we must seek Him. If we spend very little time in the word of God, we will not learn anything. We can't complain that the bible is hard to understand if we don't spend time in prayer and meditation on the word. We can't find understanding if we do not ask and seek for it. I can guarantee anyone who says they can't understand the bible has not tried very hard. God never gives us what we don't desire when it comes to holy things. He never forces salvation on anyone. He doesn't force us to understand the word or pray. There are times though that circumstances may cause one to start seeking the Lord. If that happens, it is actually God's mercy calling us. This is like the time God got Paul the apostle's attention by blinding him with a bright light from Heaven.

  • Psalm 119:95 The wicked have waited for me to destroy me: but I will consider thy testimonies.

Seeking the word of God and hiding it within the heart is the greatest guard against the enemies of our souls that try to confuse us. The enemy will try his best to get us into substitutes for God. False religion, cults, error, worldliness and many other false ways are before us.

  • Psalm 119:96 I have seen an end of all perfection: but thy commandment is exceeding broad.

Man's efforts fail to bring perfection, God's word is perfect.

  • Psalm 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.

MEM

  • Psalm 119:97  O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.
  • 98 Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me.
  • 99 I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.

The word can be our love, our meditation and what we look to daily, we will be wiser than the wisest most educated person who is educated in the things of this world only.

  • Psalm 119:100 I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.
  • 101 I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word.
  • 102 I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me.

Like the Psalmist, we also can be taught of God. Solomon desired wisdom and received it. We can too. Seek and you shall find.

  • Psalm 119:103 How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
  • 104 Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.

Understanding the word causes us to hate falsehood and lying.

NUN

  • Psalm 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

Light is comparable to the understanding of the word, darkness is representative of spiritual darkness. How great is that darkness. This is why Jesus Christ is called the light of the world. Before Christ the world was in spiritual darkness. There was no hope of salvation and no way out of sin. The whole world was lost and without God. The law given by Moses condemned us but Christ made us alive. Faith in Christ delivers from sin and brings eternal salvation and light to our souls.

  • Psalm 119:106 I have sworn, and I will perform it, that I will keep thy righteous judgments.
  • 107 I am afflicted very much: quicken me, O LORD, according unto thy word.

The word quickens. Christ is the word made flesh. We need the word to be alive spiritually.

  • John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

  • Psalm 119:108 Accept, I beseech thee, the freewill offerings of my mouth, O LORD, and teach me thy judgments.
  • 109 My soul is continually in my hand: yet do I not forget thy law.

Our trust in the safekeeping of God is our only help.

  • Psalm 119:110 The wicked have laid a snare for me: yet I erred not from thy precepts.

This is a great testimony. Even though the teachings of this world's philosophies abound continually, we must not err from the word of God which is the only dependable truth. The bible has been tried and found to be the word of God for centuries. It rejoices the heart and makes us glad.

  • Psalm 119:111 Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart.
  • 112 I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes alway, even unto the end.

Nothing else on the face of the earth offers us, deliverance from sin, eternal life, joy here and now, peace in times of trouble, answers when there is no answer, and comfort when we have no hope.  God is good. DC
