Psalm Chapter 119 Part F

SAMECH

  • Psalm 119:113  I hate vain thoughts: but thy law do I love.

Vain is empty, worthless and having no importance. It is for nothing and no profit. Thoughts that are vain are simply a waste of time. The law of God on other hand is of value, it is important and if our time is continually into the study of the word, our time is well spent.

  • Psalm 119:114 Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word.

The only place to put our trust in is the word. It is our only hope in this crazy mixed up world we live in.

  • Psalm 119:115 Depart from me, ye evildoers: for I will keep the commandments of my God.

If we keep the commandments of God, we will desire to avoid those that do evil. Those that may work among evil doers will need resting times and time apart from them to refresh the soul. Maybe this is why God made the Sabbath or day of rest. He knew we would need not only a rest for our bodies but a refreshing of the soul. This is one reason to attend the assembling of ourselves together with those that believe. It is a refreshing to worship with fellow believers.

  • Psalm 119:116 Uphold me according unto thy word, that I may live: and let me not be ashamed of my hope.
  • 117 Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe: and I will have respect unto thy statutes continually.
  • 118 Thou hast trodden down all them that err from thy statutes: for their deceit is falsehood.

We should remind ourselves daily of the fact the the righteous will remain and the wicked will eventually be destroyed. We may wonder why this is taking so long. God loves all of us, both the wicked and the good. He made a way for all to be saved if we choose to be. He sent Jesus Christ to save us from sin. All who repent of sin and accept God's way, will be saved, cleansed from sin and given the promise of eternal life.

Once we receive Jesus Christ, we can then receive the Holy Spirit that will enable us to stay out of sin. The Holy Spirit will teach us the word and put within us a desire to live righteously. The condemnation of the law that was once against us, condemns us no more if we are in Jesus Christ. The law is now in our hearts. We begin to automatically keep the moral law because we love God and desire to keep His ways.

God seems to take so long to return to those that desire to see His return. Perhaps it is because He desires as many as can be saved to be saved and not be lost. One day though, this will end and Jesus Christ will return to set up His visible kingdom. At that time the wicked will be permanently destroyed and only the righteous will remain.

  • Psalm 119:119 Thou puttest away all the wicked of the earth like dross: therefore I love thy testimonies.

This is prophecy of the day when Christ will put down all evil.

  • Psalm 119:120 My flesh trembleth for fear of thee; and I am afraid of thy judgments.

The fear of God will keep us from returning to evil. Evil will abound where there is no fear of God.

  • Psalm 119:121  I have done judgment and justice: leave me not to mine oppressors.
  • 122 Be surety for thy servant for good: let not the proud oppress me.

Until the day when Jesus Christ rules, the wicked ones will try to oppress the righteous.

  • 2Timothy 3:12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

  • Psalm 119:123 Mine eyes fail for thy salvation, and for the word of thy righteousness.

We should feel that way if we go a long time without reading the word.

  • Psalm 119:124 Deal with thy servant according unto thy mercy, and teach me thy statutes.
  • 125 I am thy servant; give me understanding, that I may know thy testimonies.

I can't stress the importance of seeking the word continually. It is really all we have to keep us from falsehood.

  • Psalm 119:126 It is time for thee, LORD, to work: for they have made void thy law.

Many in today's times are making void the law of God, even some churches. One example of this is the subject of divorce. Jesus plainly forbids divorce except in the case of adultery. Yet many ignore this and explain it away. True if one has been caught up in divorce, they can repent of this and be saved as with all sin, but if we truly love God, we who are already walking with God, should never take divorce lightly and ignore God's word concerning it.

This is only one of many things we gloss over and explain away if it doesn't fit in with our particular lifestyle or desire. We have no right to change what God says.

  • Psalm 119:127 Therefore I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold.
  • 128 Therefore I esteem all thy precepts concerning all things to be right; and I hate every false way.

All man's ways are false if they are contrary to God's word.

  • Psalm 119:129  Thy testimonies are wonderful: therefore doth my soul keep them.
  • 130 The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.

Once we begin to study the word our darkness becomes light. Just at God spoke into a dark world and brought forth light, so can the reading of the word bring light to our souls.

  • Psalm 119:131 I opened my mouth, and panted: for I longed for thy commandments.

This is a good comparison to how we should feel about the word of God.

  • Psalm 119:132 Look thou upon me, and be merciful unto me, as thou usest to do unto those that love thy name.

God will be merciful to those that love His name. He gave us the name of Jesus to trust in and cause us to have a savior to save us from sin and teach us the right way.

  • John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

  • Psalm 119:133 Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.

Order my steps in God's word. That is a prayer that we can pray from our hearts. This will surely keep us from sin. Sin will not have power over us if our steps are continually in the word.

  • Psalm 119:134 Deliver me from the oppression of man: so will I keep thy precepts.

We have to trust in the the Lord to deliver us from oppression. Both spiritual oppression and physical oppressors try to defeat us.

  • Psalm 119:135 Make thy face to shine upon thy servant; and teach me thy statutes.
  • 136 Rivers of waters run down mine eyes, because they keep not thy law.

When we truly receive the Lord in our lives and trust in the word, it will grieve us to see the world around us go about ignoring this good way. We must do what we can to try to teach others the way of salvation but we cannot use force. God will judge all that ignore His goodness and choose to remain ungodly. It will grieve us but we must remain faithful to Him continually. We must steadfastly keep our eyes on Him and trust in His word. Sometimes this may not seem easy but He is with us to give us strength to choose God rather than please men. DC
