Psalm Chapter 121

A Song of degrees.

  • Psalm 121:1  I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
  • 2 My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.

God is our only source of true help and comfort. There is no other way to obtain salvation both in this life and in the life to come. He is the author of eternal life. He provided a way for all of mankind to be saved and inherit eternal life. It is man that rejects God and rejects what God has provided.

To choose God's way however puts us in God's safekeeping.

  • Psalm 121:3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.
  • 4 Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.

The one who brings us eternal salvation is the only reliable source to protect us from evil. He never sleeps. God protects Israel and never ceases to watch over them. God made a way for all to be saved and be part of the inheritance that was meant for Israel. This comes through faith in the one God sent to save us. This is Jesus God's Son. The salvation meant for Israel becomes ours when we believe and receive Jesus into our lives.

Israel rejected Jesus as the Christ and is now out of fellowship with God for a season but they will find out who their true Messiah is before too long and will be reconciled back to God. We must not be high-minded and boast against Israel because they will be grafted back in and reconciled to God through faith in Jesus in the future. Here is Paul's explanation of these things while speaking to Gentile believers.

  • Romans 11:21 For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.
  • 22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.
  • 23 And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graff them in again.
  • 24 For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree?
  • 25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.
  • 26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:
  • 27 For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.
  • 28 As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers' sakes.
  • 29 For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.
  • 30 For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief:
  • 31 Even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy.
  • 32 For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all.
  • 33 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

We have to have our sins washed away before we can enter the kingdom of God. That is the whole reason that Jesus died on the cross. The innocent Son of God died for the sins of all mankind. The just suffered for the unjust. He did not deserve to die for sin because He did not break the law of God in any point. Since He died anyway, His death can count on our behalf.

  • Psalm 121:5 The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand.

If we who are not Israel believe in Jesus, these scriptures apply to us who believe. Because of Jesus becoming our Lord, He is our keeper also and is our shade upon our right hand. All this is ours because of the price Jesus paid on our behalf. The promises that were originally to Israel are also ours through faith in Jesus Christ. We did nothing to deserve anything but God in His mercy saved the Gentiles through faith in His Son. We receive this though by individual decisions. We don't receive a Jesus as a nation or a large group of people. We receive Him one on one making our own choice.

  • Psalm 121:6 The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.
  • 7 The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.
  • 8 The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

All these promises is for all who believe and forsake sin. As we study both the Old and the New Testament, we can clearly see Jesus our Christ. God will open our eyes that we can see by the Spirit of God. The bible is no ordinary book. It takes the Spirit of God to enlighten us and give us understanding.

  • James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
  • 6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
  • 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

God wants us to seek Him. He wants to save. It is not God that holds back, it is us. All the promises are for any who will believe. It is not limited to any race or group of people. Man, woman, child, white, black, rich and poor can receive forgiveness of sin and eternal life.  DC

  • John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
