Psalm Chapter 144

A Psalm of David.

  • Psalm 144:1 Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight:
  • 2 My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me.
  • 3 LORD, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him! or the son of man, that thou makest account of him!
  • 4 Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away.

Here today, gone tomorrow. Our lives are a vapor, yet God not only cares about us but has made a way that we can have eternal life and not permanently die at the death of our bodies. He does take knowledge of us. He cared enough to send His own Son to become flesh and live among mankind to make the permanent sacrifice for sins and usher in a perfect way of salvation that enables each believer to be filled with God's own Spirit.

  • Psalm 144:5 Bow thy heavens, O LORD, and come down: touch the mountains, and they shall smoke.
  • 6 Cast forth lightning, and scatter them: shoot out thine arrows, and destroy them.
  • 7 Send thine hand from above; rid me, and deliver me out of great waters, from the hand of strange children;
  • 8 Whose mouth speaketh vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood.

Enemies of God's people will be judged severely for harming just one child of God if they don't repent and allow God to forgive their evil and turn their lives around. On the other hand God will deliver, redeem and save those that are faithful to Him. Some have died as martyrs of their faith but in eternity their reward is everlasting. They are forever on the winning side.

  • Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

To those who have received the good way of salvation through faith in Jesus, there is a promise in Romans 8:28. This is the hope that David looked forward to even though David existed before the first coming of Christ Jesus. Once we become faithful followers of Jesus, the Romans 8:28 promise is for us. All things word together for good. David had a companion greater than the finest warriors. He trusted in God and God was working all things for his good. Even though David's failure cost him plenty of sorrow, God still remained with him and did not depart from him as He did Saul. Why? David was a man who would repent and change if he was shown that he sinned against God but Saul did not repent even though he was shown many times that he was not obying God.

  • Psalm 144:9 I will sing a new song unto thee, O God: upon a psaltery and an instrument of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee.

This is why we sing to God in worship. Either with instruments or without instruments, we can worship God with singing as well as praise.

  • Psalm 144:10 It is he that giveth salvation unto kings: who delivereth David his servant from the hurtful sword.

David would have been dead many times if God had not delivered him.

  • Psalm 144:11 Rid me, and deliver me from the hand of strange children, whose mouth speaketh vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood:

We do not need to be among those that practice lies and speak vainly.

  • Psalm 144:12 That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace:
  • 13 That our garners may be full, affording all manner of store: that our sheep may bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our streets:
  • 14 That our oxen may be strong to labour; that there be no breaking in, nor going out; that there be no complaining in our streets.
  • 15 Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.

Happy, blessed, peaceful, full of joy, satisfied, fulfilled, and protected. There are not enough words to describe the joy of following the Lord and walking in His presence. This can be for all who will believe and receive Jesus Christ. Jesus is the door to salvation. When we walk through that door our past is gone. All sins are never remembered again and we become new creatures in Christ. Old things have passed away. All things have become new. DC
