Psalm Chapter 58

To the chief Musician, Altaschith, Michtam of David.

  • Psalm 58:1 Do ye indeed speak righteousness, O congregation? do ye judge uprightly, O ye sons of men?
  • 2 Yea, in heart ye work wickedness; ye weigh the violence of your hands in the earth.
  • 3 The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.

My prayer this day is Lord help us to avoid lying. I notice that even normally good truth telling people are tempted to lie during election years if they are more into party politics above what is right and what is truth.

David here is unknowingly describing some of our political ads and speakers. I know we want our particular side to win but it is evil and will accomplish evil if we bend the truth, distort or lie to discredit the character of someone running for office.

Truth is one thing but blaming candidates for things they did not do, making them appear different than who they really are is lying. Lying could be used to make the candidate appear better than they really are or worse than they really are. I also dread election years for this very reason. It is depressing to hear all the filth we hear at election time.

When President Trump won the election, some have went so far as to forge documents to bring the President of the United States to defeat. We don't have to lie to win elections. If we do then we will not win in the long run. We may win the election but sooner or later the lie will come back onto our own heads. What goes around comes around. If we lie about someone, one day someone will tell a horrible lie to discredit us. We reap what we sow.

To the rioters and looters I say this. He who lives by the sword shall die by the sword. What you do to the innocent victims by violence showing no mercy by killing innocent people, destroying their property by rioting or beating up someone that disagrees with your politics or being mean to someone for any purpose, will come upon you. You will die violently and spend eternity in hell for killing those innocent people in that manner. We reap what we sow. If we sow discord, we will reap discord. If we lie in order to gain, it will be done to us. If we deceive, we will be deceived. Politics is no excuse for the sin of lying. We have to be careful also not to accuse people of lying without checking out the facts carefully.

  • Psalm 58:4 Their poison is like the poison of a serpent: they are like the deaf adder that stoppeth her ear;

A liar truly spews out poison just as a poisonous snake. They accomplish evil and no good purpose is accomplished.

  • Psalm 58:5 Which will not hearken to the voice of charmers, charming never so wisely.

A snake that is deaf will not hearken to any charmer. A liar will not hear those that try to reprove them.

  • Psalm 58:6 Break their teeth, O God, in their mouth: break out the great teeth of the young lions, O LORD.
  • 7 Let them melt away as waters which run continually: when he bendeth his bow to shoot his arrows, let them be as cut in pieces.
  • 8 As a snail which melteth, let every one of them pass away: like the untimely birth of a woman, that they may not see the sun.
  • 9 Before your pots can feel the thorns, he shall take them away as with a whirlwind, both living, and in his wrath.
  • 10 The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance: he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.
  • 11 So that a man shall say, Verily there is a reward for the righteous: verily he is a God that judgeth in the earth.

This is what we need to remember. God is the one that will hold the final judgment. What we've done while we are in our present body will be judged. We tend to forget this in a moment of temptation when we are quick to lie to further our own purposes or to cover up for something we did and don't want anyone else to know about it.

We do not have to be a slave to lying, deceiving and sin. Jesus Christ offers us a way out. He gives to us a Spirit to abide with us and make us different people. We don't have to lie. We can be free from sin and lying. If we are Christians who have fallen back into this sin, we can be free. Repent and do the first works. If we have never yet received Jesus Christ, we can repent and turn to Him. He will wash away every sin so that when the judgment day arrives, God will not see any sin.

The blood of Jesus that He shed on the cross will cover every sin that we bring to Jesus and lay down. When we come to Christ confessing our sins and forsaking them, we become "born again." We become a new creature in Jesus Christ. Lying, cheating and stealing passes away and all things become new. Free.. Free.. free.. from sin, born again. A new beginning and a new life is ours for the asking.

We reap what we sow. If we sow to the Spirit, we will reap life eternal. If we sow to the flesh and yield to sin, we will reap everlasting judgment in hell. It is our choice.
