Deuteronomy Chapter 4

  • Deuteronomy 4:1 Now therefore hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes and unto the judgments, which I teach you, for to do them, that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which the LORD God of your fathers giveth you.

God says to obey the statutes and judgments He gives and they will "live" and go in to possess the land. To obey is even better than sacrifice, to hearken than the blood of lambs. It is simple, but the flesh fights against obedience. The flesh desires its own way but in the end it results in death. God has the better way but most of us choose to do our own thing and end up lost. Israel could have ruled the world had they been obedient to God and never strayed.

  • Deuteronomy 4:2 Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.

This was important then and it still is important even in today's church. If we add to God's commandments, we make the way too difficult and sometimes our additions are substituted for God's original word. Tradition many times replace the word and we end up with a religion rather than a one on one relationship with God.

If we take away from the commandments, it opens the door to sin. People will think they can sin and still be right with God. They become lukewarm and in more danger than the out and out unbeliever because the lukewarm believer thinks he or she is okay when in reality, they are just as lost as the sinner who has never believed in Christ. So to add to or take away from the word of God is dangerous. Both extremes can cost many to miss the beautiful message of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.

During the middle ages when there was only one church and even during the Protestant Reformation we had creeds and doctrines that either added to or replaced the word of God. Christianity became just a religion with no Holy Spirit baptism or power to change the inner man. That is why they could persecute and put to death dissenters.

Now we have the opposite problem. We have taken away from the word and watered it down so much that sin is rampant in the church and among believers. When Christians claim Christ but sin just as much as the unbeliever, something is wrong. We can preach Christ all we want but if they see that we live no different than the sinner, what are we to tell them that Jesus saved us from? If Jesus came to save us from sin but we are still sinning, what does that say to the unbeliever who may be living a better life than we who claim Christ are living?

  • Deuteronomy 4:3 Your eyes have seen what the LORD did because of Baalpeor: for all the men that followed Baalpeor, the LORD thy God hath destroyed them from among you.

False doctrine is dangerous. Balaam's doctrine was that Israel could commit fornication and still be blessed of God. In reality he wanted God to curse Israel so that he could receive a reward from the king of Moab. God did not want Israel to intermarry with Moabites because they worshipped Baal and other gods. God is not a racist. It is not the race or color of another clan that bothered Him but the fact that all the nations surrounding Israel were into idolatry, even those that were also descendants of Abraham like Esau and Moab.

Balaam was a prophet who wanted a reward and planned a way to get Israel to sin against God so that God would curse them since he had no power to bring a curse upon them himself like he originally was hired to do. The king of Moab wanted to defeat Israel in battle but could not do so as long as God was with them. Balaam plotted against Israel by sending in beautiful Moabite women to them to entice them to sin against God thereby making God forsake Israel.

The fornication would cause God to withdraw His protection and also cause the souls involved to be lost because they would be enticed to serve the gods of the Moabites.

Many times God does not have to send judgment and destroy a nation. If He withdraws His protection, they have no power to defeat stronger nations. Israel was always small and weak without God. It is only by the power of God that they succeed in overcoming their enemies.

Israel needs to recognize this. This started with Abraham. He was called out and chosen but when things got tough, he went down to Egypt for help. This started a pattern of trusting in Egypt. His son did the same thing. Later the brothers of Joseph sold him and he ended up in Egypt. It worked out for good during the famine but it also brought all Israel to Egypt where they were influenced and later made slaves by a nation that worshipped false gods and were deep into idolatry. When they were brought out of Egypt, all the plagues put upon the Egyptians were actually judgments against their false gods.

Later when Israel began to lust after and desire the ways of Babylon, they were made slaves to the things they lusted after. They went into bondage to Babylon. One nation after another ruled Israel until the time of Christ. Their rejection of Christ caused them to lose their nation completely until 1948.

They would have no power at all if it was not for God.

  • Deuteronomy 4:4 But ye that did cleave unto the LORD your God are alive every one of you this day.

Those that believed and clave to the Lord were allowed to enter the promised land. Those that went into unbelief and fear, died along the way.

  • Deuteronomy 4:5 Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it.
  • 6 Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.

To obey God will bring forth fruits of righteousness which will influence other nations. Sin causes us to lose our influence and we become like dead branches that have to be broken off and replaced by grafting in other branches in its place.

  • Deuteronomy 4:7 For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for?
  • 8 And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.

  • Deuteronomy 4:9 Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons;

This is why good bible teaching is necessary along with preaching. We must teach the younger generations the word of God. If we don't they will go into unbelief or follow false religions that will not save the soul.

  • Deuteronomy 4:10 Specially the day that thou stoodest before the LORD thy God in Horeb, when the LORD said unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children.
  • 11 And ye came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire unto the midst of heaven, with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness.
  • 12 And the LORD spake unto you out of the midst of the fire: ye heard the voice of the words, but saw no similitude; only ye heard a voice.
  • 13 And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone.
  • 14 And the LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go over to possess it.
  • 15 Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves; for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day that the LORD spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire:
  • 16 Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female,
  • 17 The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the air,
  • 18 The likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth:
  • 19 And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the LORD thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven.

Idolatry has been the downfall of many nations even Israel and in more modern times, even the church.

They did not see the image of God even when He was close to them upon the mountain. They were not to make any graven images to what they thought was the likeness of God or anything in creation. Idolatry will open the door to Satan faster than any other sin. In fact it will lead to all other sins that steal, kill and destroy.

During the early middle ages, Idolatry was brought into the church because people didn't want to live by faith but wanted to pray to something they could see. Little did they realize that instead of praying to God they were praying to devils. Evil spirits surround any idolatry or substitute for the real God. We will still feel religious and even have good feelings at times but it will not be the real God. We don't need something visible. We are to find God by faith. By faith are we saved, not by sight to seeing something.

The churches that trust in images, need to throw them out and begin to seek the real God. Those statues are not the real Mary, mother of Jesus. She would not accept our worship anyway. We are never to worship Mary or any image representing her. People that do so are badly deceived. We are never to worship any saint, relic, statue of Jesus or anything. It is idolatry. I will not even put those things in my yard.

  • Deuteronomy 4:20 But the LORD hath taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, even out of Egypt, to be unto him a people of inheritance, as ye are this day.
  • 21 Furthermore the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, and sware that I should not go over Jordan, and that I should not go in unto that good land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance:
  • 22 But I must die in this land, I must not go over Jordan: but ye shall go over, and possess that good land.
  • 23 Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make you a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, which the LORD thy God hath forbidden thee.

Idolatry even angers God today. It is an insult to God to make an image representing Him. I personally do not believe we should make an image of Jesus for Jesus is God who came into the flesh to become one of us so that He could die for our sins and usher in God's plan of salvation. This in turn made a way for both Jews and Gentiles to be saved and inherit eternal life. To truly believe in Christ is to be born again by God's spirit and be saved from sin. Remember sin is what is separating mankind from God.

  • Deuteronomy 4:24 For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.
  • 25 When thou shalt beget children, and children's children, and ye shall have remained long in the land, and shall corrupt yourselves, and make a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, and shall do evil in the sight of the LORD thy God, to provoke him to anger:
  • 26 I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that ye shall soon utterly perish from off the land whereunto ye go over Jordan to possess it; ye shall not prolong your days upon it, but shall utterly be destroyed.

See how dangerous idolatry was to Israel. Is it not also dangerous to the church?

  • Deuteronomy 4:27 And the LORD shall scatter you among the nations, and ye shall be left few in number among the heathen, whither the LORD shall lead you.

This literally came to pass many times when Israel went into idolatry and disobedence.

  • Deuteronomy 4:28 And there ye shall serve gods, the work of men's hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.
  • 29 But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.
  • 30 When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the LORD thy God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice;

During the last great tribulation that is to come upon Israel and perhaps the whole world, they will at last turn to the Lord their God and He will have mercy and save Israel one last time. All Israel's trouble has been because of idolatry and disobedience in the past centuries and for rejecting the way out of the mess; which is salvation through Jesus Christ.

  • Deuteronomy 4:31 (For the LORD thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.
  • 32 For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and ask from the one side of heaven unto the other, whether there hath been any such thing as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it?
  • 33 Did ever people hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as thou hast heard, and live?

God chose Israel to bring forth the savior that would bring salvation to all who would believe. Only Israel saw the miracles and experienced the presence of God in their midst like no other nation before or after.

  • Deuteronomy 4:34 Or hath God assayed to go and take him a nation from the midst of another nation, by temptations, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by a stretched out arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?
  • 35 Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest know that the LORD he is God; there is none else beside him.
  • 36 Out of heaven he made thee to hear his voice, that he might instruct thee: and upon earth he shewed thee his great fire; and thou heardest his words out of the midst of the fire.
  • 37 And because he loved thy fathers, therefore he chose their seed after them, and brought thee out in his sight with his mighty power out of Egypt;
  • 38 To drive out nations from before thee greater and mightier than thou art, to bring thee in, to give thee their land for an inheritance, as it is this day.
  • 39 Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the LORD he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else.
  • 40 Thou shalt keep therefore his statutes, and his commandments, which I command thee this day, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days upon the earth, which the LORD thy God giveth thee, for ever.

Like I said before, Israel could have ruled the world if they had not have sinned against God and went into idolatry.

  • Deuteronomy 4:41 Then Moses severed three cities on this side Jordan toward the sunrising;
  • 42 That the slayer might flee thither, which should kill his neighbour unawares, and hated him not in times past; and that fleeing unto one of these cities he might live:
  • 43 Namely, Bezer in the wilderness, in the plain country, of the Reubenites; and Ramoth in Gilead, of the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, of the Manassites.
  • 44 And this is the law which Moses set before the children of Israel:
  • 45 These are the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which Moses spake unto the children of Israel, after they came forth out of Egypt,
  • 46 On this side Jordan, in the valley over against Bethpeor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon, whom Moses and the children of Israel smote, after they were come forth out of Egypt:
  • 47 And they possessed his land, and the land of Og king of Bashan, two kings of the Amorites, which were on this side Jordan toward the sunrising;
  • 48 From Aroer, which is by the bank of the river Arnon, even unto mount Sion, which is Hermon,
  • 49 And all the plain on this side Jordan eastward, even unto the sea of the plain, under the springs of Pisgah.

As we continue the study of Israel through the kings, prophets, bondage and deliverance, we can see clearly how idolatry caused the downfall of this nation over and over again. The disciple John even tells the church:

  • 1John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
  • 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

Idolatry leads to many other sins:
Fornication, sacrifice of innocent children, greed, selfishness, hatred, fear, bondage, and many other things that accompany the evil spirits behind idols.

Only a relationship with the pure, holy, righteous living God can free us from those influences. This is why God came in the flesh through, Jesus Christ to show us the holy and living way. To receive Christ and then add idols is surely the worst of any abominations and defiles the pure holy worship that God gives us through

Through trust and faith in Jesus Christ, we now can worship Him in spirit and in truth instead of relying on a place. Idolatry ruins all that and returns us to relying on a place (wherever the idol is). This is why I even avoid this new thing going around where we set up prayer stations, not to say that is totally wrong. We have places where we eat, sleep and such, however, to totally rely on one place could be the first step back to idolatry. Don't rely on a certain place. Pray always and everywhere. Pray in the spirit. Pray without ceasing. It is good to pray alone and should be done. Pray with the family, pray with the church. Do all these things but avoid using images and relying on just one particular place. We need to be reverent of course and not take God lightly but we must not use idols and images but seek Him by faith.

Without faith it is impossible to please God.

Words written in bold are the actual words from the bible. Other words are my thoughts on what the bible says and is never to be taken as equal to the bible itself.  DC
