Leviticus Chapter 6

  • Leviticus 6:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying,
  • 2 If a soul sin, and commit a trespass against the LORD, and lie unto his neighbor in that which was delivered him to keep, or in fellowship, or in a thing taken away by violence, or hath deceived his neighbor;
  • 3 Or have found that which was lost, and lieth concerning it, and sweareth falsely; in any of all these that a man doeth, sinning therein:
  • 4 Then it shall be, because he hath sinned, and is guilty, that he shall restore that which he took violently away, or the thing which he hath deceitfully gotten, or that which was delivered him to keep, or the lost thing which he found,
  • 5 Or all that about which he hath sworn falsely; he shall even restore it in the principal, and shall add the fifth part more thereto, and give it unto him to whom it appertaineth, in the day of his trespass offering.

The law of God that was given to Israel was a basis for many future governments in many ways. They had to set up a government in order to have peace among those millions of people that came out of Egypt. Until the literal coming of Jesus Christ to set up a perfect government, we have to have some sort of law and order. Without it there is chaos and the strong can quickly overcome the weaker ones. Without government there is much injustice and cruelty. Of course we know that sometimes the governments themselves become oppressive and corrupt but we never want to throw the baby out with the bathwater and have no government.

Without rules and regulations mankind tends to go overboard the other way and have no restraints. Before the flood, the earth had become so violent and unruly that there was no other solution than what God did to stop all the civil disorder and violence.

We have to have government and now we see that along with God's laws, they had to set up a government to allow for justice and peace to protect the innocent.

This is why God set up the law. First as a schoolmaster to bring us to Christ or to show the need for a savior to remove sin. Secondly the law was given to keep iniquity in check and protect innocent people from being harmed by those in power. We always needs law and order.

  • Leviticus 6:6 And he shall bring his trespass offering unto the LORD, a ram without blemish out of the flock, with thy estimation, for a trespass offering, unto the priest:
  • 7 And the priest shall make an atonement for him before the LORD: and it shall be forgiven him for any thing of all that he hath done in trespassing therein.

While the sin offering covered the sin of those that had sinned without realizing it was sin, the trespass offering was for willful sin. That too could be forgiven. The trespass offering was required to make amends or restore what was lost by transgressing the law of God. If a man or woman did wrong to their neighbor, they must make it right with that neighbor as well as make it right with God. This is called making restitution where possible.

Christ fulfilled the law as far as sacrifices for sin but we still need good governments until the time when Christ Himself sets up a perfect government.

Until everyone is saved and filled with the Holy Spirit and until everyone learns to obey the word from the heart, we need a few rules and regulations to live by. In other words we need God's commandments also because it shows us how to live and treat one another. Without those commandments there is no basis to know what is right and wrong.

Until that which is perfect is come which is the literal coming of Jesus Christ, we have to have commandments and governments or mankind will return to the disorder and violence that occurred before the flood. We see in today's world that it is happening as I write this article. Because people have ignored God's commandments we have violence and sin abounding more and more.

What was once wrong is considered right and what was once right is considered wrong. We are all mixed up.

It will get worse until the return of Jesus Christ because men are rejecting God. They are choosing either other gods or religions on one hand or just ignore any moral restraints and do what they want on the other hand. Either way, whether it is no God or false religion, it will bring evil and violence just like it was before the flood.

Christ fulfilled the sacrificial law but we still need moral and civil law because everyone is not yet obedient to the gospel and the word of God.

  • Leviticus 6:8 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying,
  • 9 Command Aaron and his sons, saying, This is the law of the burnt offering: It is the burnt offering, because of the burning upon the altar all night unto the morning, and the fire of the altar shall be burning in it.
  • 10 And the priest shall put on his linen garment, and his linen breeches shall he put upon his flesh, and take up the ashes which the fire hath consumed with the burnt offering on the altar, and he shall put them beside the altar.
  • 11 And he shall put off his garments, and put on other garments, and carry forth the ashes without the camp unto a clean place.
  • 12 And the fire upon the altar shall be burning in it; it shall not be put out: and the priest shall burn wood on it every morning, and lay the burnt offering in order upon it; and he shall burn thereon the fat of the peace offerings.
  • 13 The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar; it shall never go out.
  • 14 And this is the law of the meat offering: the sons of Aaron shall offer it before the LORD, before the altar.
  • 15 And he shall take of it his handful, of the flour of the meat offering, and of the oil thereof, and all the frankincense which is upon the meat offering, and shall burn it upon the altar for a sweet savor, even the memorial of it, unto the LORD.
  • 16 And the remainder thereof shall Aaron and his sons eat: with unleavened bread shall it be eaten in the holy place; in the court of the tabernacle of the congregation they shall eat it.

The meat offering was a pleasant offering and sweet smelling in which the priest could partake of it and be fed. It was without leaven. It was pleasant to the Lord. The sin and trespass offerings on other hand were not pleasant and they were offered as a sacrifice for sin.

Other offerings such as meat, meal and thanksgiving offerings also benefitted and fed the priests and Levites.

  • Leviticus 6:17 It shall not be baked with leaven. I have given it unto them for their portion of my offerings made by fire; it is most holy, as is the sin offering, and as the trespass offering.
  • 18 All the males among the children of Aaron shall eat of it. It shall be a statute forever in your generations concerning the offerings of the LORD made by fire: every one that toucheth them shall be holy.
  • 19 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying,
  • 20 This is the offering of Aaron and of his sons, which they shall offer unto the LORD in the day when he is anointed; the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a meat offering perpetual, half of it in the morning, and half thereof at night.
  • 21 In a pan it shall be made with oil; and when it is baked, thou shalt bring it in: and the baked pieces of the meat offering shalt thou offer for a sweet savor unto the LORD.
  • 22 And the priest of his sons that is anointed in his stead shall offer it: it is a statute forever unto the LORD; it shall be wholly burnt.
  • 23 For every meat offering for the priest shall be wholly burnt: it shall not be eaten.
  • 24 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying,
  • 25 Speak unto Aaron and to his sons, saying, This is the law of the sin offering: In the place where the burnt offering is killed shall the sin offering be killed before the LORD: it is most holy.
  • 26 The priest that offereth it for sin shall eat it: in the holy place shall it be eaten, in the court of the tabernacle of the congregation.
  • 27 Whatsoever shall touch the flesh thereof shall be holy: and when there is sprinkled of the blood thereof upon any garment, thou shalt wash that whereon it was sprinkled in the holy place.
  • 28 But the earthen vessel wherein it is sodden shall be broken: and if it be sodden in a brazen pot, it shall be both scoured, and rinsed in water.
  • 29 All the males among the priests shall eat thereof: it is most holy.
  • 30 And no sin offering, whereof any of the blood is brought into the tabernacle of the congregation to reconcile withal in the holy place, shall be eaten: it shall be burnt in the fire.

Sin offering was to be burnt by fire and the meat offering was to be eaten.

The atonement for sin points to the sacrifice of Jesus as as sin offering and peace offering to make reconciliation for the rest of all mankind and bring them back to God that sin is separating us from.

All the laws concerning these offerings show us that there were different purposes and all had to be done a certain way just like our salvation is provided to us only one way and that is through the shed blood of Jesus Christ for remission of sin.

The other offerings other than sin and trespass offerings were a type of our praise and worship where once we have come to Christ, we serve Him and worship Him in spirit and in truth. Praise and worship is like the sacrifice of meal and meat offerings. Offerings of thanksgiving were also a worship type of offering.

The sin and trespass offering were pointing to the sacrifice of Jesus Christ which was given to cleanse us from sin. We can see how the Old Testament law and sacrifices are a picture or type of that which is to come.

Notice another thing with these offerings and sacrifices. Some of the offerings were those that worshippers could partake in similar to our offerings of praise. We worship and partake in our worship to God offering our service and our praise with song and voice. We partake in our worship and we are part of it. Our hearts are involved, we commune with God and we worship from our innermost being.

The sin and trespass offering though is different. To me that says that the sacrifice of Jesus for sins was something done by God alone and we have nothing whatsoever to do with that offering of atonement on our behalf. It is all done for us. Our part is to receive and believe what was done for us by turning from sin and turning to Christ. The offering itself is done by the Lord. Our own good works, our own praise, our own service cannot save us from sin. That service is provided by the Lord when we simply believe in Him to save us from sin.

The other offerings though bringing their service to the Lord, their worship and their praise is what they partook of to communicate with God. We do that through working for the Lord to spread the gospel, supporting the work of the gospel or in our praise and service to the Lord. Attending a worship service with other believers is part of this service that we do because we love Him, not to save us from sin. The salvation from sin and gift of eternal life is freely given, it can't be earned by our works except the work of believing in what He did for us.

  • If we confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in our heart that God has raised Him from the dead, we shall be saved.  Romans 10:9.

He that believes in Him shall have a river of living water flowing from within his or her innermost being. DC

God is good.
